Mother May I? Here's a Request Form for Reprint Permission
While surfing the Net or reading biz books, we all come across info that really strikes a chord. "This is great stuff," we say. "I've got to share it with others!" But then you realize that, given Murphy's Law, the Copyright Police will see your nifty newsletter or ad featuring this borrowed material -- with no permission from the publisher! (Gasp!)
So, what's a regular biz owner to do?
Idea Cafe's been down this route. This week's form makes it easy to request permission to reprint those incredibly inspiring words and keep your conscience (and liability) clear.
This permission form sample happens to pertain to a website, but if you want to reprint from a book, magazine, or newspaper, just change the wording accordingly in the "Request to Reprint Copyrighted Material" section.
When describing the material to reprint, specify:
- the source, title, and author
- the page numbers of the information
- the section title, if applicable
Specify as much as possible what info you want to use. If it's only a few lines, you might want to include them in this section of the form.
Always let a publisher know your purpose for the reprinted material. This form also conveniently allows publishers to respond to the request on the bottom half, but be prepared to fill out one of their own authorization forms.
So, print off this permission form and file it away for that rainy day when you read some witty words or too-good advice that deserves to be shared. The Copyright Police will be thrilled!
