What does your business do?
We designed women's work pants directed towards women in racing, automotive, and trade industries that can hold up to the abuse of our jobs
When and why did you start the biz?
I am a NASCAR mechanic and struggled for years to find proper work pants that could hold up to my job and meet the industry standards so I officially started Torq'd in 2017 after spending a year developing the pants. I am currently mid production on my second batch of work pants after the first 100 I had produced by a factory in New York did a very poor job, my new factory is in New Jersey.
How Many People are in your Company?
Where's your office?
My office is mostly my second bedroom that is also my primary craft and projects room, I have 15ft worth of table space along with 3 storage racks for my inventory. I also have a cricut cutter, 3 sewing machines and a small screen printing set up to make some of the shirts myself that I design on my website.
What's the toughest part of running your biz?
I work full time in NASCAR traveling so I am gone typically 3-3 1/2 days a week and I work 2 full days in the shop from beginning of February until the week before thanksgiving so I communicate with my factory mostly through email and I work whenever I have time off to grow and improve the clothing line. I am a mechanic by trade so fashion and marketing is not my strong suit I've been learning as I go with trial and error on some parts.
What's the most fun part?
Being able to connect with other women in automotive trades and seeing their excitement when I talk about what I am creating because it is a very lacking item. Men have 10 different brands of work pants to pick from while women have police and military options or to wear mens pants that are extremely uncomfortable and very unflattering.
Anything you would have done differently?
Done more research on factories and utilized makers row before I gave my first factory money to make 100 pairs of pants when they had never made pants before they just neglected to tell me that.
What's next on the horizon for your biz?
I am expecting my new pants from my new factory in august I will be getting 100 pairs ranging from size 2 to size 16. Once I get these pants I will be starting on women's knee length work shorts and pants for women pipe fitters and boilers because they need a specific type of fabric due to the high temps they work in. Im hoping in the next 5 years to be able to offer some scholarship help to young girls looking to get into automotive and trade industries.
What advice do you have for others?
Spend the money for the added research before you invest in a company to produce something it will save you tons of time and money in the long run.
How do you use Idea Cafe to help your biz?
Learn more about grants and funding options available and resources to help with my weak points in running a business.
School (where, still in school, degree)?
vocational automotive school
Prior jobs or business?
NASCAR mechanic for 7 years, service advisor for 2 years prior and a lube tech prior to that
mac and cheese
What are your pets' names?
gypsy and jynxy
Do any of these pets help with your biz?
they help keep me sane when I get stressed and keep me company late at night when im preparing last minute for something
Is there any one person or event in your life that led
you to go into business for yourself?
after years of not being able to find work pants that could last more then a week I started designing and once I got a job that I could afford to put money into developing work pants I started contacting factories and sample makers.
