What does your business do?
Consulting for unique problems at the interface of legacy systems (government,
healthcare, education) and high-tech.
When and why did you start the biz?
I started the business in 2013 when I was a 4th year medical student. I did
freelance consulting for medicine and public health in Silicon Valley. We've
expanded to a website, corporate/ivy league clients, and more recently our first in-
house product the 'empulse' app.
How Many People are in your Company?
Where's your office?
We have two offices, one in Orinda CA and one in San Antonio TX. Most of our
work is online and we have clients and consultants all over the world.
What's the toughest part of running your biz?
Task-switching. In the last year we've looked at problems in retinal-image analysis
for China, small modular nuclear reactors in Oregon, homelessnes in California,
parasites in the Peruvian Amazon, and 3D printed hands for amputees in Pakistan.
The methods to solve these problems are surprizingly similar, but being conversant
and respectful of experts in each discipline is difficult.
What's the most fun part?
I think we get to pick and choose clients that really need us. That and drawing on
talent from so many diverse fields.
Anything you would have done differently?
I wish I had realized I was a founder, not an employee sooner. I could have been
more efficient about it.
What's next on the horizon for your biz?
We designed the 'empulse' app to solve hard problems for researchers on
homelessness. But we have realized there is a wider application for everyday
people. Translating this sucesss to the real world is our current aim.
What advice do you have for others?
The gig economy is the future of work. Embrace it. More importantly, be kind about
We must learn to treat strangers with the same courtesy we accord our
workmates, neighbors, and family to thrive in a digitial economy.
How do you use Idea Cafe to help your biz?
I'd really like to get help with my 'empulse' app. Its a tech-for-good showcase for
my consultants work and I think it could benefit many people in the US and abroad.

What are your pets' names?
Do any of these pets help with your biz?
Well they give me oxygen?
Is there any one person or event in your life that led
you to go into business for yourself?
My aunt is an inspiration. She is self-sufficient and pragmatic and made me
