Fountain of Jacob, Inc.

Name: Ann Jackson

Location: Hickory, NC

Type of Business:
Family Advocacy and Community Support Agency

What does your business do?
We are a family advocacy and support services nonprofit organization. Fountain of Jacob is focused on empowering and transitioning the community by assisting with homelessness, domestic violence, drug, alcohol & substance abuse, HIV/AIDs, marriage and family, and veterans. Our goal is to assist by conducting classes to educate and providing aid to them by getting them off the streets and into a safe and stable environment.

When and why did you start the biz?
The company was birthed in 2004 from a vision found in the Book of Deuteronomy 33:28. The scripture declared that “they would dwell secure in a land of grain and new wine, where the heavens would drop dew”. The goal of this company is to support at-risk individuals in the community regardless of their ethnic culture or background. There was an urgent need to foster services that would offer promises to homeless persons, especially homeless veterans, victims of domestic violence, drug, alcohol and substance abusers, aged-out foster care children and teenage and youth adult mothers that suffer from low self-esteem. Fountain of Jacob will work through close partnerships with other community organizations, cooperatives and church affiliates to enhance services and opportunities to build up and strengthen our communities. How Many People are in your Company?
5

Where's your office?
My office is located in uptown Hickory. I lease an office suite so that my clients will have a place to come and learn how to start their lives over again. The office is set up almost like a home type atmosphere so that they will feel free to open up and express their needs and just know that someone really cares about them.

What's the toughest part of running your biz?
The toughest part running my business is trying to place some of clients that have bad credit and trying to find suitable housing.

What's the most fun part?
The most fun I have is when I can end my day on a good note because I was able to help those individuals that have gone for assistance everywhere else and they allowed me to help them and they left with the biggest smile of the faces because everything was worked out for them, especially those with families.

Anything you would have done differently?
Early in my life, I had some of the same experiences that many of my clients have and I am sensitive to their needs. I enjoy what I do for others and I would not change anything I have done up to this point but move forward to help as many persons as I can reach.

What's next on the horizon for your biz?
The next on the horizon is opening up an Empowerment/Transitional/Educational Center. This will have teach them how to pour back into the communities and learn that they can be accepted and feel good about themselves in the process.

What advice do you have for others?
I would express to them the importance of not giving up regardless to their situation and to strive towards being the best they can be and respect and love themselves. I would also tell them that every 'No' is not a bad thing, but it could be a stepping stone to something greater.

How do you use Idea Cafe to help your biz?
I would use it to connect with others and to learn more about how to secure grants and learn from others as well as allowing them the opportunity to get to know more about my business.

School (where, still in school, degree)?
Graduate of Central Piedmont Community College, North Carolina Central University (NCCU) and Liberty University

Prior jobs or business?
Educational Director, Pre-School Teacher, HIV/AIDs Medical Case Manager, Domestic Violence Case Manager, SASSI Assessor, Legal Research Specialist, Entrepreneur, Asst. Billing and Account Manager, Trade Floor Tracker, Human Service Board Certified Practitioner, Grantwriter

Favorite Food?
Hamburgers

What are your pets' names?
Eeyore

Do any of these pets help with your biz?
No

Is there any one person or event in your life that led you to go into business for yourself?
The event that led me to go into this business is watching people that needed help not have anybody to help them get it. It was painful to see people on the streets or losing their homes and have nowhere for them or the families especially those with small underage children.

Anyone you publicly want to thank?
I would like to say Hi to everyone.
