Classroom Confidence

Name: Jill Depretis

Location: Henderson, NV

Type of Business:
Educational Consultant

What does your business do?
Highly Qualified teacher of 16 years. I would like to start a coaching business that will not only provide tutoring but additional support such as: career coaching, help applying to college, self esteem, additional practice resources, and educational support for parents as well.

When and why did you start the biz?
I recently resigned from our district last June. I have had it in the works since.

How Many People are in your Company?
1

Where's your office?
My office is in a large, walk-in closet. I have 4 girls, one is 3. Every room in our house is full. I have made a space inside my closet and put a desk. Luckily, I have a nice window in my closet. It is odd, but it is perfect. I have ran a cord to the closet and have been able to set up a work space. The majority of my business will be at my client's home, so despite the worn shoes, it works. Always look to the positive.

What's the toughest part of running your biz?
It is a bit seasonal. As parents don't usually realize their child needs help until about September, when the first progress reports come out. However, there are just enough parents that believe in summer support to keep it going.

What's the most fun part?
The best part is the same as when I was teaching. I was an inclusion teacher for 11 years, which means I taught the kids with disabilities. The best part is the feeling they get when they see that they "can". So often due to their disability, they are told that they "can't".

Anything you would have done differently?
I haven't been doing this long enough to have much, but I did discover one thing. Originally I opened my business geared towards my community. Many couldn't have me at their house due to other children's dance, etc. and it was hard to schedule. I opened up an online portion, and that was great. Also, I can now offer to the entire nation. I believe in today's world, an online component is necessary.

What's next on the horizon for your biz?
I plan on providing additional support to parents. So many don't know how to help their child. I will teach them how to read their child's test scores, show them where to find the Core Standards, and provide them online access to unlimited resources and extra practice. I will also teach them how to monitor and assess their child at home so that they can take back the responsibility from the school and they will be able to have a little more control of their own child's progression.

What advice do you have for others?
Believe. That is about all it takes. Believe in yourself, and believe in others;everyone can.The only question is whether or not they want to.

How do you use Idea Cafe to help your biz?
While this is the first time I have logged onto this site, I wouldn't be able to say "I am, too new to answer". Once on, my eyes lit up. I was amazed at all of the resources I have been missing. Pages and pages of advice, business plan advice, grants and resources, this site has it all.Though it is true, I haven;'t been on this long enough for detail, I will be on it all night, right after I finish this.

School (where, still in school, degree)?
Bachelors in Ed, Certified Life Coach

Prior jobs or business?
Clark County School District, Highly Qualified teacher, Response to Intervention case manager and Behavior Specialist.

Favorite Food?
Fun Dip? or Enchiladas

What are your pets' names?
daughter's snake is Mel

Do any of these pets help with your biz?
HA! No, but hmmm....

Is there any one person or event in your life that led you to go into business for yourself?
I watched my principal illegally hold one of my autistic kids on the ground while he cried. Then watched her lie to his mom. This was a regular thing. I called my district to report it but they told me to keep quiet and reminded me of my confidentiality agreement. I was heartbroken. I decided that day that I wouldn't allow it to stop me from supporting these kids, but it would stop me from working for those who don't.
