Top Health Startups Responding to the Coronavirus Pandemic

In six months, Covid-19 has swept around the world, killing more than 700k people and infecting over 20 million. In addition to the impact on people’s health, the economic effects have been devastating. Millions have lost their jobs, companies have gone under, and economies in most western nations are struggling. There is no end in sight yet, but for a few enterprising health startups, the news isn’t all doom and gloom.

American PAPR

One of the biggest problems from the beginning of the Covid-19 outbreak was the lack of personal protective equipment. Healthcare workers were often forced to improvise using refuse bags and homemade face masks because their employers couldn’t obtain enough PPE.

American PAPR has risen to the challenge. They produce NIOSH approved PPE for healthcare workers fighting on the Covid-19 front line. They have made the first PAPR with a PAPR100-N classification to be approved by NIOSH, which includes essential safety requirements such as low airflow and battery alarms.

Doxper

Telemedicine has come to the fore during the pandemic, as vulnerable people are forced to self-isolate and everyone else is asked to stay away from clinics and hospitals for the same of everyone’s health.

Doxper, a US-based health startup has invented an instant digital system that allows healthcare professionals to triage patients via a digital prescription and health record database. Healthcare professionals can use the Doxper pen to record patient notes on customized coded paper. The notes are uploaded to the cloud and synced across all devices. This helps to streamline Covid-19 patient referrals and reduce workload in a swamped healthcare system.

Kry

Kry is a Swedish digital healthcare startup. It has built a free web-based platform to allow healthcare professionals to keep in touch with patients in Europe. It’s designed for anyone self-isolating or unable to talk to a doctor in-person.

Neopenda

Covid-19 is a new virus, so we have a lot to learn about how it works and how it spreads. Monitoring patients in real-time is critical, as this helps healthcare providers review their status and monitor disease progression.

Neopenda originally created a health monitoring device for neonatal units, but it has switched its focus to devices for adults. The Neopenda wearable device monitor’s the patient’s respiratory rate, pulse rate, and body temperature. The device can be used to monitor multiple patients, with data transmitted to one device, so a single doctor can keep a close eye on a ward full of Covid patients. If a patient’s vital signs exceed the healthy range, the device triggers an audio alarm to alert doctors.

Covid-19 Tracker Apps

Tracking the spread of coronavirus is critical. To that end, a number of startups have come up with health tracking apps.

  • Baylon Health, a UK-based startup, has created a symptom tracking app for Covid-19.
  • Sidekick Health created a tracker app for Iceland’s national healthcare system.
  • Velmio, based in Estonia, created a tracker app and plans to share the data with healthcare researchers.

There are many other healthcare startups keen to do their bit during the pandemic.

  • UiPath, a Romanian robotics company, has created software robots that can take over essential administrative tasks, such as inputting patient data in hospitals.UiPath’s robots have been working hard in an Irish hospital, so nurses can spend their time helping patients.
  • Liki24, based in Ukraine, is a pharmacy startup. It has been offering free deliveries for medication during the pandemic.
  • Patchwork, a healthcare staffing platform based in the UK, has made its platform free to use for all NHS healthcare Trusts.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Many more healthcare startups across the world are donating time, resources, and research to the fight against Covid-19.

We’re all in this together!
