Portable Welding BusinessPAGE 2 Your Service NicheAs you can sense, your start in business will be from customers who need welding done now. This is a great service niche, so be sure to advertise and emphasize this niche to all your target customers. Let them know you're the "welder willing to come at the drop of a hat" or that you're "the same-day welder." Start-up Stuff for WeldersIf you choose not to have a shop right away, your overhead will be much less than others. So your start-up costs are simple -- a truck and a welder. You'll most likely need a sales tax license (usually no cost) and see if any other kind of license or bond is required for being a welder in your state. Liability insurance is also a must, so be sure to talk to your insurance agent on what policies would work well for you. Plus, you'll need commercial plates on your truck, especially since you'll want your business name lettered on the side for advertising and business purposes. If your business is mostly small welding jobs, set a minimum service call rate of around $50-$75. Believe me, when a pin-setter or loader is sitting idle waiting for a welder, it's costing companies big money. Most of those type of customers won't even blink an eye at a minimum charge of $75, especially if you can be on the site within a couple hours. It's Not Just About WeldingRemember, running a successful business isn't simply knowing how to weld. It's also knowing how to sell yourself and charging accordingly for your services. Here's a book you might consider buying to help you with your welding biz idea!
