The Biz Question I run a web design firm for small businesses in central Pennsylvania with a partner. Between the two of us we run a legitimate business that's pulling in a lot of work... more work than we can handle with just the two of us. We need to hire someone to keep up with the work coming in, but we can't afford to hire someone because of lack of funds. It's a catch 22. I really feel if we could just raise enough capital to hire a few employees we could break out of the small business bubble into a larger arena. Any ideas?
Each week we pluck reader questions from CyberSchmooz and ask our savvy biz experts to give you their ideas -- compliments of the house! Got biz questions of your own brewing? Go post 'em in Idea Cafe's CyberSchmooz. You'll get peer-to-peer help from fellow entrepreneurs. Answer from our Guest Expert Lillyvette Montalvo Consider Independent Contractors! Here's a tip you can really sink your teeth into...hire on a contract basis! Hiring independent contractors will allow you to have the additional persons you need "on board" your business without having to worry about a weekly payroll and all the other expenses and red tape that go along with hiring employees. This can truly reduce the level -- and size -- of your headaches when it comes to having full-time employees at this point in your business. When you tend to hire full-time employees at this stage, you run into the everyday need of cash flow...although cash flow will be a problem once you continue to grow and feel the need to hire additional persons on a free-lance basis, it'll be at a more manageable level for you at this point.
