I'm interested in starting a business where I would handle calls for classifed ads (rental properties, cars, homes for sale). However, I have no idea where to get information from regarding such a venture.
I'm not actually sure what it would be called (anyone have any ideas)? also not sure what type of equipment I would need (is there a specific phone that would accomodate such a task)? Any information anyone can offer would be greatly helpful....Please Help

Okay, so what I'm thinking is that you would have to ask your phone company about how to obtain a few phone numbers for the one line. Either that or set up a few phones with a number each. I think on really busy days (such as weekends) you would probably need some help (another person) in fielding these calls. You don't want to keep people waiting. Also, you would need to get as much information as possible from the people placing the ads, so that when people ring up with questions you can answer them all. I think it is actually a clever idea, but it would need to be set up quite precisely. Also, what would you be charging for your services? Some people may not like having to pay for a classified ad in the local paper and THEN pay someone to field calls for the ad. Just a few things to think about.

As for what you would call it... I'd call it a "call center".
You would probably need a telephone system as opposed to just a single telephone so that you could see which company's phone was the one ringing... Although, in the 50's and 60's such places had a desk with dozens of phones laid out on them and if the phone rang, they simply answered that phone with that company's name.
The phone company's business line department could hook you up with someone who can help you figure out exactly what you need, but you wouldn't be able to run it on a private phone line, I don't think.
