"Want to Work at Home? Watch Out for These Scams..."
Posted by Evelyn on 08:55:54 3/29/99
Following is a list of some popular scams that you'll see all over the internet, in the backs of magazines, newspapers, and in your mailbox:

Envelope Stuffing - You pay them $30 (or whatever) for the privilege of advertising for other people to pay them $30. There are variations of this one - I recently heard of a woman who paid $30 and was then told to stand on a street corner selling flowers!

Craft/Electronic Assembly - You pay them anywhere from $20 to $200 for "your kit", then if you ever hear from them again, you will be asked to assemble something that, no matter how brilliantly done, will NEVER meet their so-called quality standards.

Lists of Companies that Hire Homeworkers - Can you look in a phone book? That's about all they've done. Many of the companies on these lists, if they exist at all, don't know they're on the list, and don't hire homeworkers.

Reading Books for Pay - Another list, this one of publishers (and you can get a list of publishers on the net for free). And while it may be true that some publishing houses pay people to review manuscripts, they pay their secretary or their mother's best friend, so unless that's you, save your money.

Home Typists - The only requirements are a computer and a good quality printer, and of
course, your payment up-front. What will you be typing? Probably orders from other people that you've had to advertise for who want to work as "home typists".

Order Taker/Application Taker - same as "Home Typists".

Email Processors - see "Envelope Stuffing" above.

$6 Chain Letter - It's only $6, so why not give it a try? Well, if you're that desperate to part
with $6, you might as well just send it to me :) You won't get anything either way, but, hey, I
won't put you in jail, because no matter what they say in their loooong pitch, it's totally illegal
and doesn't work!

Now, if you're still not convinced, look at it this way: If a company was willing to pay you $2 for every envelope that you stuff, and said you could make $1000 a week, AND you could live
anywhere, AND they accept EVERYONE who applies, can you imagine how much money they'd be paying out??? Now, maybe MacDonald's spends that kind of money on advertising, but XYZ company with a P.O. Box address - I don't think so! And if it were really true, do you think they'd have to look further than their own back yard to find people to fill the positions? Nah, they'd have people knocking down their doors to get them - they certainly wouldn't have to advertise for people out-of-state!

As far as making beaded jewelry - how many people do you see these days walking around wearing long, dangly, beaded earrings that they paid $25 for? So where's their market? There isn't one.

Here's another one: assemble tiny little intricate doll house furniture and get paid $3 a
piece. Who do you think is buying those when they can get them at any dollar store for a buck?

So, always remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it is, and never pay anyone for a job, no reputable company will ever ask you to. There are plenty of legitimate ways to make money working at home without having to fall prey to these scams. I work at home and I've never had to pay anyone to hire me - they've paid me, which is as it should be.

Hi,
I am interested in what you have to say. I, amongst lots of others in New Zealand, have difficulty in contacting some of the so called "Work at Home" companies and would love some help with legit, opportunities.
The contact address, Fax, e-mail, of such companies would be appreciated.
Thanking you, Graeme. (cantyg@es.co.nz)

Hi Sharon,

Have you considered starting your own typing service at home? Real estate, insurance, and small business owners are some types that will on occasion outsource work. You could write up an introduction letter offering your services. Make it short and to the point, stressing the advantages to them of using your services.

You could also offer office services to local contractors - phone answering, appointment setting, invoicing, etc.

Reminder service is another one - for doctors, vets, carpet cleaners, etc.

Hi Evelyn. Thanks for the advice. When I was first forced to quit 'outside the home' employment due to health problems, I fell victim to a scam - the old 'make a craft at home'idea. In particular, sewing covers for back rests. Needless to say, as you mentioned, after approving the inital few and enticing me to buy a larger 'kit', my work was never approved again. Instead, we just kept sending the pieces back and forth - each time a new inspector would discover a defect that the previous inspector had "missed" - once I received my pieces back with seams torn out! I certainly hadn't submitted them that way! It was a nasty experience, but I'm wiser now! I would be interested in knowing if you have indeed found a good legitimate work-at-home opportunity. my email address is gingells@easilink.com Thanks!

I have started a company - June 1, 1999 Launch. The company will offer to our customers an inexpensive way to market products and services over the Internet (including e-commerce). We will then forward order and payment to our customers (the vendors). As you may know it can cost well over $1,000 to set up a secure and high quality e-commerce site on the net, so our pricing is very reasonable at only $10 set up and $10 per month, plus a small transaction fee and discount rate charges from our merchant account provider.
We are forming a MLM organization to market these services. It is our feeling that the best prospects will be crafters, small manufacturers, or distributors who are not currently on the net, or can't justify the cost to do it right (just to see if they can sell their products/services on the net).

Our MLM compensation plan can pay up to 60% commissions to 7 levels. 50% based on a minimal sales production with 10% available in bonuses based on Personal Sales. A Sales representative can qualify for a "retirement option" which will eliminate the need to qualify for commissions based on personal production.

The Sales organization will see residual commissions based on repeat business serviced by the company.

This is a brand new business, and to date, we have not found any price competative competition.

Our site will be up very soon with additional information, or people can write to me. Customers who "sign on" before June 1, will recieve free time on the service. We are trying to "pre-sell" our June 1 launch.

Looking forward to your comments, and hopefully the interest of you, your downline organization, and readers of this site.

Matt
mhsorensen@aol.com

P.S. people that don't want to worry about the MLM aspects of the plan can simply go after the 30% available commissions on their personal sales.

P.S.S. In my opinion this is the perfect sideline for people who like to go to craft shows or explore small novelty shops.

Hi Bob,

Hopefully, now you won't have to fall for any more scams :)

An easy way to tell if an opportunity is for a "job" or a "scam" is this: do they ask to see your resume, samples of your work, and references? Do they want to set up an interview (an interview for a homeworker can be done on the phone or on-line (I have one on-line next week))? If they do ask for those things, like any normal employer would, then it is probably legit. If they don't, and only want you to "email them for more info", or send them money, it's almost assuredly a scam. No legitimate employer will ever ask you for money to hire you, period. Remember that and you won't get scammed again.

Hey Patty!

I know what you mean! My favorite is the ad that says something along the lines of 'make 2k per week doing absolutely nothing'. If I don't have to do anything, why don't they just send me a cheque??? :)

When I said money up-front, I wasn't referring to MLM - I was referring to people asking you for money to hire you for a job. I know there are lots of legitimate MLM's out there, but since you mentioned it, they also have a bad rap because many of them start out with a lot of hype and a few big guns, who make their money, then drop that biz to start a new one, maybe leaving a lot of people in their wake who were really putting in a big effort to make it work. It's all too easy for people with no experience in MLM to be caught up in all that hype. I know they're not all like that, but there are many that are, so people don't fail only from not putting forth an effort, but sometimes just from inexperience or lack of knowledge.

It's the same in both worlds. All the scammers who offer work at home opportunities make it harder for the few who offer legitimate ones to be taken seriously, and all the MLMers with big hype and false promises make it harder for good solid ones.

One of the mystery shopping companies I work for has a rep who always answers my email questions or complaints with "in a perfect world..." - well, it's not a perfect world, and everyone needs to exercise caution where their pocketbook is concerned.

Hi, Evelyn, I have seen your post in other areas before, and I can't help but notice that you never mention what YOU do. :) Just exactly how does one go about *finding* these plenty of legitimate ways to make money working at home? I am in network marketing, I am fortunate to have found a couple of good companies, I am making a small income from them but not enough to stay at home yet. I need to be working at home due to a worsening chronic illness, but do not want to take on any more MLMs. I also do not wish to try to convince my employer (a state government) of the obvious reasons to pursue telecommuting, etc. I would like to hear more about your experiences working at home and getting employment.

Posted by Evelyn (glenbren@openface.ca) on 13:17:04 4/21/99
Hi Lynne,

I think I've seen you too - prepaid legal, right? Maybe the internet's not such a big place after all!

I've done mystery shopping, web site promotion, data entry, remote data collection, I'm taking a course for a job writing movie descriptions for the blind, and I have an interview tomorrow for a job as a message board moderator. I belong to an association that provides job listings for homeworkers, and that's where I've found most of the jobs I've gotten (also where I learned about all the scams). There are plenty of opportunities for people who want to work at home. It helps if you have skills and experience for such things as programming, web design, transcription, writing, translating, etc., as those types are more in demand, but there are also things that people without that experience can do. I was a technical editor in my past life (before becoming a WAHM), and while I'd still like to do some editing, these other jobs have proven quite enjoyable.

I'm glad you've found some success with MLM's - my experience with MLM's has been less than profitable. The only one I had any success with shut down before it even launched!

Anyway, don't give up, there really are opportunities to work at home, even if it means starting your own business. You didn't mention what your job was with the state government, but maybe it's something that you could offer as a service to other companies, even if you don't want to approach your present employer? Or maybe you have a hobby that you could turn into a business? I had a gift basket business for a time, and I've also made and sold crafts.

Also, tell everyone you know what you want to do. Opportunities sometimes come from the most unlikely places. I had a cleaning woman tell me that someone she worked for was writing a book and she ended up hiring me to type and edit it. Course, she hired and fired me about 5 times and finally ended up giving me $5 for about 30 hours of work - but it could have been a good opportunity :)

Hi, Evelyn,

Thanks for the great thread here on scams. As the bizybody moderator for CyberSchmooz, I find it increasingly difficult to separate the good from the bad biz opportunities. We really try to keep the forums "clean" of scams, but yet, I'm learning that some opps might be okay even tho my initial reaction is to slice and dice them off the board!

Well, anyway, while reading your reply to Lynne, I noticed among all the great background you have that you belong to an assn. that lists job for Work-at-Home Moms (WAHMs)....is that a resource that we should recommend here in our new WAHM forum?

Let me know what you think? Thanks again for your help and advice

I noticed a couple of items of interest that I'd like more information on if possible. I'd dearly love to find out what Association it is that Evelyn gets her information from. I'd also like to find out more about the movie description business. It sounds interesting if it's legit. Unfortunately, it sounds a little too good to be true and I'm skeptical about the $50 up front. What if you don't pass the course? Does anyone ever pass the course?

I'd sure appreciate your pointing me in the right direction for more info on these two resources.

Thanks much.

Hi Linda,

For info on the association, see my post #12.

About the movie describing course, I was skeptical at first also and I really checked into it before I sent them my money. Unfortunately (for you if you're in the States), it is a Canadian company and they only hire movie describers in Canada. They did offer your money back within a certain time if you decided it wasn't for you, and promised if you passed the course, you would get at least one movie to describe, so you would way more than make your money back, and said if you were good, you could expect regular work. The course is interesting, but not easy. I've been busy on other things and have put it aside for a while, so I can't really tell you more than that, except to say that I know there is also an American company that does the same kind of work, only on a much larger scale. I can't remember their name, but they're in Boston. I don't think they offered a course though.

Is it a resource you should recommend? Well, I, as a satisfied member, would recommend it highly, but you don't know me from Adam, so there's no reason you should take my recommendation. However, after reading your post, I took the liberty of emailing their head office, and they have offered to give you a 2-week member pass. That way, you could check it out and see for yourself if it's something you'd wish to recommend to others in your forum.

Let me know if you're interested.

Hi, Evelyn,

Well, I suppose I don't know you from Adam, but over the past few months, as the moderator of these forums, I've gotten a good feel for your desire to warn people of scams and you leave quality postings....

So, when you mentioned you belonged to an assn. that listed legit home opps, I thought that might be a resource we could tell others about since so many Schmoozers are interested in finding such work/biz opps and I was simply asking if you thought this might a good resource for others...which I gather you would since your experience has been a positive one with this assn.

I just was curious about its name, mission statement...if its a members only type association, my first question would be who gets to be members? and How?

What's the association's name and/or website or place of contact?

If you feel like giving us a little more background on it, that'd be great. If not, I want to thank you for making an effort here to get me in for a pass, but I was just trying to prompt you for more detail on something that peeked my interest and possibly other Schmoozer looking for at home work.

Thank you for your time, Evelyn.

Posted by Evelyn (glenbren@openface.ca) on 13:41:33 4/23/99
Well, I just thought you might want to check it out for yourself, but I'd be happy to give you some background.

The association is called Independent Homeworkers Alliance (IHA). I've been a member for 2 years now, and as you've already gathered, I'm quite happy with the services they provide.

They have a job board on which they post legitimate jobs for homeworkers, daily, in many fields, including data entry, writing, web design, telemarketing, transcribing, billing, coding, translating, programming, scheduling, etc., etc. They don't post jobs that require a fee up-front either. If a company wants to list a job that requires a fee, they're asked to waive it for IHA members in order for it to be posted. One company waived their "registration fee" and then started asking for money for "training materials" and they were quickly removed from the board.

They also have discussion forums on all topics relating to working from home and starting your own business, including scam watch and personal employment counselling, and offer at-home study courses in transcribing, billing, coding, the internet, writing, and several others. They also have insurance benefits, scheduled chats with guest speakers (they try to get someone from a company that's hiring), and much more.

I find the discussion forums are invaluable. Besides also finding job leads in there, you can get personal advice and assistance just by asking. The staff and other members are always willing to help.

IHA is also continually improving. Liz Folger has her own discussion forum to answer member questions and her articles appear in the weekly newsletter, and Lynie Arden (author of the Work-at-Home Sourcebook) also has a discussion forum and performs custom job searches.

As with most associations, there is a membership fee, but they have plans available to suit most budgets, and the first 24-hours are without obligation when you join, so you can cancel within that time if you find it's not what you're looking for. Also, the jobs data base is available for anyone to see (without the contact info for the jobs for non-members). And, the weekly newsletter has great articles on working from home and always includes a few job listings from the data base, and it's totally free and anyone can subscribe to it.

For anyone who's interested, they offer a free infokit by autoresponder. All you have to do is send an email to service3@homeworkers.org. The infokit has all the information on prices and links to all the different sites, etc.

So, anything else you'd like to know???

Evelyn

Hi,
I just went through your post and feel if you spent as much time and effort into this you would see the opportunity that you probably are to busy to see. If you would like to discuss please post!
I get so many idea's from these postings and I am starting to feel bad about the fact that most don't see or get it. Meanwhile I make all the money of your idea's and venting. Wake up!

Regards,
Paul

Hi Paul,

I'm sorry, it's very early and maybe I'm not totally awake yet, but I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about! Could you please be a little more specific? Wake up to what???

Evelyn

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows about the "NetOpp" opportunity? Wondering if it's a scam too!

27. ""Net Opp""

Hi Evelyn, I stumbled upon this "NetOpp - The Internet Opportunity", marketing on the internet. It claims that no 'initial investment' be made. It is SO hard to find an opportunity to make money without spending money first and now that I see one that makes that claim...I can't believe it anyway! It is at www.netopp.com. Do you know anything about Excell?

Jen

28. "Free Business Opps"
Posted by Evelyn (glenbren@openface.ca) on 07:34:32 5/13/99
Hi Jen,

NetOpps is only one of hundreds of free biz opps available on the internet. My advice - don't jump on the first one you see.

Following are but a few of the sites I found by doing a search on Netscape for free affiliate programs. I looked at most of them and they seem like good sites. You could find more just by doing a search for affiliate programs or reseller programs and free. Many list categories, so, if you like health products or books or dogs, you could find a program selling those products. You're more likely to be successful if you're selling something you like or believe in.

Anyway, these ought to keep you busy for a while:

30. "Legitimate Opportunities"
Posted by Evelyn on 12:36:53 8/12/99
Hi Annette,

Don't let one bad experience discourage you. There are legitimate jobs out there, more and more all the time.

Go to http://www.workaholics4hire.com and you'll find an organization that will help you find a real job. They provide a database of job listings with no scams, biz opps or up-front fees ever, and it's totally free.

You'll also find lots of great support from the owner and other members on their message board.

Hope to see you there

Evelyn
