"Name needed for children's clothing store"
Posted by melanee on 19:46:19 5/03/2004
I am in need of a name for my children's clothing store. My store will have a real whimsical look to it, I have tried to think of names with the word "whimsical" in it but haven't had much luck. I will have infant through young girls and boys clothing, with one section being gently used. I will be bringing in brands that are not common in this area, really funky, chic brands. Any thoughts on a name would be appreciated.
Also anyone who knows of a great logo designer would be of a big help!

Okay...why not go with what you have already, like...

"Whimsy Kids Clothes"

You could use something like "Whimsy, the Clown" for a logo, and decorate as 'whimsical' as you (or your customers) can stand...(^_^)

Cheers-

PS...nice to see someone use the word "whimsical"

Thank you Gene, I agree "whimsy wear" is a great choice, and the domain is available. (whimsey wear is not).

Now do you think "Whimsy Wear" is fine by iteself, or do you think I should add the kids clothes behind it?

Or would you come up with a tag line with the "kids clothes in it"?
Thanks so much for your input, I value you and everyone's opinion!
Melanee

8. "Children's Clothes Store"
Posted by GeneS on 05:22:35 5/06/2004
Melanee -

I would go with "Whimsy-Wear" for the NAME only. That way you can maintain whimsical, light, fun atmosphere in (or relating to) the store

I would add a slogan/tag like...
"Your Kid's Clothes Headquarters"
or
"A new choice in kids clothes"

Cheers-

10. "important points"
Posted by Joel on 12:51:44 5/07/2004
If you're going to get a domain name, it has to be something that's not easily confused with the domain name of a site that's already out there, or soemthing that's easily misspelled. It also has to be a dot.com domain name. Too many people still don't understand that there are non-dot.com domains for businesses, and if you hand them .biz, they'll get confused, type in yourdomain.com, and go straight to your competitor (or an empty web page). This is especially true if you're going to be sending clients to your web site (like with a sign in your window) rather than by directing them to your store via your web page (via an ad in Google AdWords or a directory, in which case the clicking part means that there's not much room for error). I know it's really really really hard to find a good .com domain name these days (I would like to scream long and hard at the people who snatch up domain names just for the sake of it, or for the deluded goal of reselling it for thousands of dollars), but it might motivate you to think about a truly unique name and explore possibilities you might not have explored otherwise.

Remember that your domain name and your business name do not have to be one and the same, though they should be related. If your name starts with "the" or "a" it might even be a bad idea to make the whole name your domain name, since a lot of people will leave out "the" or "a" since that's the convention for information organization.

Here are some domain names that are available (note that they're all kinda long; good short domain names are scarce these days, but a long dot.com is still better than a short .biz or .net):

Chic Children Clothing
(ChicChildrenClothing.COM)
This one's not whimsical but it sounds more like what your business will be...problem with this name is that there are too Cs run together with the chicchildren, which can be a problem; you could try chicchildrensclothing, but that can also be a problem because theres no apostrophe.

Enchanted Forest Clothing
(EnchantedForestClothing.COM)
Maybe you could choose a theme like "the enchanted forest" (I was thinking of the 100 Acre Wood from Winnie the Poo). Of course, "wood clothing" sounds funny but I'm sure you could think of something in this spirit, and I bet at least one of your ideas will have a domain with it.

A source of ideas for you: what books or movies do you think of when you think of the image you want your store to project? I'm thinking now of Winnie the Pooh, but maybe it's something else. While you probably can't use any character or place names (unless it's a copyright-expired book), you can rework the character or place names as long as you don't make an explicit reference to the original work.

Another good idea would be to look at similar stores in other parts of the world to draw inspiration.

Best of luck.

Joel.

11. "yes, you are right Joel"
Posted by melanee on 20:17:25 5/07/2004
Joel,
Yes, I guess you are right regarding the .com , .biz. I guess I didn't even consider that.

Regarding what I consider whimsical... everyone has a different idea on whimsical. I guess the best way I could describe it to you is by showing you. The first website http://www.embelleez.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv
This has a very whimsical look to it. It's about color, the art being used etc-
The second website shows her portfolio. http://www.coolbabygraphics.com/portfolio.html
She has GREAT work. She has very whimsical fonts, colors and designs. Another item people consider to be whimsical would be butterflies, dragonflies, ladybugs, clowns .... you get the idea, Whimsical color choices pinks, lime green, purples, oranges, yellows etc- think BRIGHT and CUTE!
I did like your name suggestions!
Thanks for your input!
Check out the sites, they are worth looking at.
Take Care
Mel

12. "ahhh...two different ideas of whimsical"
Posted by Joel on 20:31:39 5/07/2004
When you said whimsical, I thought you meant like teddy bears that wore monocles or something like that. This is a more sort of fun whimsical...but do you mean you want the look of the store to be whimsical or your products or your image? What kind of products are you selling?

You said they were cool, funky, kind of high end. You know what plays well to that crowd? Social justice issues (well, sometimes). Just find some baby clothes that aren't made by children themselves--like you can verify with the importer or something...or better yet, buy clothes maybe that were made by people who were struggling to get by, poor people who were in business for themselves (I wrote for a web site that helped working people start their own businesses and their products were often quite unique, accion.org). Or they are made out of hemp or something...you know?

I think whatever your name is, it has to tie into your product, and to me, and maybe to a lot of people, "whimsy" is teddy bears having a picnic, and what you're thinking of is more like "fun."

Good luck.
