"Biz idea of helping small businesses get publicity in magazines"

Hi There,
I'm thinking about starting a business in which I help small businesses get publicity in magazines & newspapers. Basically, I would offer different Pr packages. It would be an in-between of a do it yourself PR & a business where you pay for a Publicist or pay for publicity(which is expensive) I would match up your business with leads & COMPLETE info of particular magazines, stories they are looking for which fit their business, editors names, contacts, deadlines, what type of story etc. Something that would take hours for anyone to collect this kind of research. For example- Sue Smith of Vogue Magazine is looking for womens accessory gifty christmas items- under $50 for Cosmopolitan Magazine. Her criteria is.... deadline is... Contact info.... Depending on the package the customer chooses, would depend on how many contact they would get matched with.
The packages would contain different info- such as contacting celebs with their products(giving celeb addresses), giving them ideas for a special "hook" to get editors interested & a variety of pr ideas & help/ pr special reports. It seems that small businesses don't have a clue to getting in newpapers , magazines & even on tv. What do you think of this idea

This sounds like a good idea. My first question is how much are your packages? I think small businesses aren't too worried about PR becuase it is not the best place to invest their limited funds. I could be wrong though. Maybe you could contact some small business owners in your area and see if they would be interested in this kind of service.

Good Luck!

I think it is a great idea. But I think by selling it as a one-time PR thing, you are missing potential residual income and giving yourself more work than necessary.

If it were me, and of course, it isn't, I would open a blog/podcast/videocast directory and charge memberships. This would not only give you payment for your work, you would get paid residuals on the advertisers for the directory, submitters (magazines, etc.) would begin to submit the info to your list for free and your members would pay for the privilege to access new and relevant information.

If you want an intro to a podcast directory specialist, email me and I'll introduce you to the woman who is helping me set up mine.
