"50/50? 30/70? how to manage the profits?"

Hello!

My brother and I want to start a small architectural illustration business, where I do the drawings and other technical stuff and he manages the business and gets new clients and work... He thinks we should divide the profits 50/50 but since its going be working a lot of more time working I don't know if this is the best way to go... Should I work all by myself? Please give me some advice...

Thank you!

First off you sound confused from the get go. If I can interpret your posting correctly you are concerned because you think that you will put in much more time than your brother for your 50% right? Since you are the worker bee you likely will, but SO WHAT! If your brother delivers the work, that has REAL VALUE, equal to or exceeding your value. Not every one can get business but a architectural illustrator can be hired, if you get my meaning.

If you can get the business and do the business by all means work by yourself, it will be much easier on both you and your brother. If he would like to bring you business and take a percentage that would be okay too, right?

Hope this helps.

My advice?

Go speak to a lawyer, they'll need to draw up the papers for your partnership anyway.

What you are conserned about ... one person working more than another, is a RED FLAG, that you're not ready to do this.

One way to do it, without having him as a partner, is to start the business yourself and give your brother a percentage of the work he brings in.

Only go into a partnership with family if you can deal with hating each other in the future.

If you are already having problems and the business isn't even started yet it doesn't look good. It is always difficult to have a business relationship with family and friends and you should always consider whether the business is worth losing that relationship because that is what often happens.

Managing business and getting new clients is a LOT of work. The business can't run itself and without clients, you don't have a business. 50/50 is only fair and I really think the two of you should hire a lawyer before getting started.
