How small is small? What type of business are you trying to launch?
It is important to note that grants offered to women (or anyone) to start a new business or to help an existing business usually are VERY small, in the neighborhood of $1000 or so. Depending of course on what type of business you are funding, that can be a drop in the bucket. While every little bit helps, the competition for such small amounts is fierce and the chances of someone winning such a grant is miniscule.
For people that are trying to start a business, particularly a brick and mortar business, the start up expenses can easily be anywhere from $10,000 to $100,000.
It is usually more beneficial and realistic to look to other sources for start up funding. Be sure you've written a business plan so you know exactly what you will need for start up and ongoing expenses. Then determine how much of your own money you can contribute. For the remainder of your funding needs you can then start looking into SBA backed loans or micro loans. If you find you don't qualify for those there are still other options available. See my start up kit below for more information.

If you are looking for grant programs of which you may be eligible to apply then the most important question is what type of business are you talking about? There are entrepreneurial-type grant programs out there for those wanting to start a business - one award as high as $50,000 - BUT there are conditions and requirements! Not everyone can apply and it can't just be any type of business - you have to show the merits of the business that you are trying to start.
Grant programs have been put in place to bring a greater awareness to something and in the case of entrepreneurial grants the objective is to provide start-up funds for those that have a genuine business idea.
The programs that you may be eligible to apply for will depend on many different things like the kind of business you want to start, why you want to start that kind of business and even your location because there are grant programs that have a paticular location/area in mind.
Its not enough to just say that you want a grant for your business. It will depend on the type of business.
