I have just started a STRICTLY online security products business. (www.hometurfsecurity.com). I recently received a letter in the mail from our local town hall (Town of about 1000 people) Requesting that I get a business license for it. The thing is, even though I live inside town limits, as best I can tell, they have no authority over the security business as I don't do any business in town per se. People can't come to my house and buy products. All transactions are done over a web page (hosted by yahoo) to buy products shipped directly from the wholesaler in Florida.
Do I have a leg to stand on to fight this myself, or should I just grin and pay their $40?
Ron
ps. We already have a license for the t-shirt business, but that is something we actually do here.

Have you actually called and talked to someone at your town hall? I opened an on line gift store this year and was told the same thing about a business license(of course I'm in MI and the requirements may vary by state) but when I called and spoke to the office and explained that my business is on line and doesn't exist as a physical building I was told I didn't have to get the license.
