"Seed money"

When you do not have any money to start your business but have such wonderful ideas, where should you look for seed money?

The answer to that question depends a lot on what your business idea is. Is it a small home based business that might not require a lot of start up cash? Is it an Internet business that offers your own products or services? Is it a business that requires a brick and mortar location? Is it something that can be started on a smaller scale until you can gather the require capital for the full scale business?

The reality of business ownership is that you need to come to the table with at least 30% of your own cash. From there you can apply for SBA backed loans. There are also microloans you might qualify for (SBA).

Have you written your business plan so you know exactly what you will require? Again, where can you scale back?

Have you sold off any big ticket "toys" or considered a home equity loan or cashed out a 401K (last resort...not recommended)? Have you taken your business plan to friends and family and offered a piece of the pie in return for capital backing? Have you considered taking out cash from credit cards? Granted a lot of these ideas are the best way to fund a business, but if you haven't even started saving at this point, you need to consider all options.

I offer more little used funding options below.

Oops. I meant to say a lot of these are NOT the best way to fund a business!
