While many business could and probably should have a logo, some are content to focus on their name, which may or may not describe their business.
Some may have been turned off with a high priced quote they recieved when they checked with an ad agency or a higher-priced artist.
The graphic capabilities of computers with appropriate software has made it possible for non-artists such as myself to create simple logos, artistic and expressive fonts for the business name, and lowering the costs in the process.
In addition, there are even some inexpensive websites with logo generating capabilities that allow a business owner or employee to create new logos from scratch without the need for Adobe Illustrator, PhotoShop, CorelDraw, QuarkExpress, or other expensive software.
So, what have you done to generate targeted traffic to your site for businesses and organizations that might be ready for a logo?
Are you networking in your local business community to introduce yourself and your service?
Have you contacted other businesses who work with logos to see if you can do contract work for them? Not every ad agency keeps an artist on staff. And, some who have one or more artists on retainer, may be ready to look at someone new with fresh ideas.
You might also want to contact the Promotional Advertising distributors in your area who put the clients logo on ink pens, calendars, USB memory sticks, and 750K other items, who might need your service from time to time. (Warning: I have online sources who will convert low-resolution .jpeg files and even scanned art from business cards or newspaper ads who offer a flat rate of $10 for simple 1-color logos. And not just artists in India and other 3rd world countries. Oh yeah, this includes 24 hour service and sometimes far less turn-around time.)
If you are focused primarily on online buyers, be prepared to compete for the low-budget business, or limit yourself only to the smaller number who are more concerned with quality than price.
Are you using Search Engine Optimization, keywords, and meta tags to bring in online searchers to your site.
Between the computer software with tutorial DVDs readily available and all the colleges, universities, and vo-tech schools offering computer graphic courses, the market of capable artists far exceeds the small number of full-time jobs available, forcing many to target the same market you are seeking to serve.
It will help if you can offer additional services such as pre-press typesetting and other related work. Pure logo creation can be a one-shot business. I have a client that is coming up on their 60th anniversary, and they are only on their 3rd logo in all those years. Many will never need your service a second time if they only need a logo.
You might check with your local SCORE office or Economic Development agency to see if they have any advice for you.
Good luck in growing your business.
