"First time buying inventory - help!"

I'm a start up women's clothing boutique. I hope to open in the early fall of '09. When is the best time to buy for this season? Should I attend market? Can any business be done by setting up separate appointments with vendors?

Any advice regarding my first buying process would be greatly appreciated. I don't know where to start and it seems like so much money to spend all at once!
Thanks!

Rachel Sciaba

Typically you buy a season before. So if you will open in the fall you buy in the next month or so for Fall delivery.

If you can afford to go to market or you live close to one then, yes, go. You learn so much there. The vendors are there to make sells and most will be helpful. You can set appointments. For the "big ones" this would be suggested because they will be very busy. But for the smaller ones it isn't necessary.

I am not sure what your format for your store but a way to add quick sellers at high market up is to keep a small amount of "off-price" items. These can be bought right before you open for the current season.

Another suggestion is to buy two tops for every bottom.

Good Luck!

I have been a buyer for 20 years. Some brands do have reps that will call on you, and some you will see at market and some simply over the phone and web. every brand is very different. If you go to market, there is alot to see, but also alot of pressure to buy, so be careful.
I can answer more for you if you like some advice and help.

Hi,
I am a manufacturer of gift products, jewelry, etc. and my suggestion is to find suppliers who have low minimum order requirements and fast deliveries. That way you can order small and re-order as the items sell.
