I have developed a new gift basket idea for new mums and babies, have a website (babybouquetsandgifts.com) the baskets are baby clothes created to look like flowers then complimented with silk flowers. One thing you have to do is build a list of folks that would be potential buyers of your product. Not that easy, but essential to your success.

Over the next four weeks or so, I'm able to offer interested folks a way to build that list of potential customers at NO COST.

HOWEVER.. I'm ONLY interested in working with folks that will put forth a genuine effort to build their own list, and promote their site(s).

If you're interested, email me. pegeler@yahoo.com Subject: Build My List.

Yes, e-bay would be a good way to expose your website. Also, with a website like yours there are a few other good ways to go about it. Research Search Engine Optimization because any reputable website will be doing this. I have ranked, reviewed, and compared the top SEO tools at www.vital-knowledge.info (posting 10/9/06) which could be pretty helpful in your case.

Also a really quick way to generate traffic would be to test the Google Adwords waters. This is a very quick and effective way to market your site but if your not careful with what your doing, it could get really costly.

Is a great way to test the waters!

1) Be sure you seek out the very best category to post your auction in.

2) Make a special point to direct your viewers to your "AboutMe" page. There you can put any additional information about your products, as well as a LINK to your website! (The only Ebay Legal way to link to your website.)

Very creative and they are adorable. Have you submitted this to any publications for posting under New Products? Is there a new mom/baby site on the web that is well respected and does reviews of products that you could submit a basket to for review?

Could you work with a local or national group that needs fund raiser donations - it can also be a great way to advertise your unique baskets.

Hi Kiwigirl,

Are you having trouble:

1) Generating qualified traffic to your website?

2) Closing sales?

3) #1 and #2 above?

The reason why I ask because these are two different subjects and must be handled separately.

If you're having trouble with #1, then I would suggest looking into the following:

1 - Word of mouth

2 - Participating in online bulletin board discussions

3 - Making your own flyers

4 - Include your business information in your email signature.

5 - Sponsored (pay-per-click) advertising

6 - Search engine optimization

7 - Networking on websites such as Idea Cafe, LinkedIn, and Ryze.

8 - Partnerships with other businesses

9 - Generating an opt-in mailing list

If you're having trouble with #2, if you haven't done so already, I would take a look at something called a "web analytics" package. Please note, this is different than your standard web site statistics package that you might get from your typical web hosting provider.

To keep it simple, web analytics is designed to tell you exactly where your visitors are coming from, what they do while in your store and how long they are in your store. It's the equivalent of having a sales associate on the sales floor of a retail store watching what everyone does while in the store. Web analytics also helps you understand where your website is failing to serve your customer. This is key. Nowadays, running a website without analytics software is the equivalent of watching people simply walk in and out of your store without knowing anything about what they did and what their intent was while in your store.

If you (or anyone else reading this post) need assitance with attracting shoppers or closing sales, contact me and I'll see what I can do to help you.

Also check out http://www.phardy.com/cafearticles for information on how you can improve your sales presentation.

Hope this helps.

While your site is very, very pretty, with very clear photos. However, its not selling me on your products.

You have great photos. However, as I read, I still can't figure out in the first few lines what you're selling.

The "above the fold" doesn't make me want to scroll down the page to learn more. It's too crowded. I'd make it match your other pages.

You said that "everyone said it was a great idea"... Was this people you didn't know? Did you do market research? Have you developed an ideal client profile?

I don't see an address on your site. Very important if you want someone to buy from you.

I'd change "About" to About YourName" and include a picture of you. If you are a mom, tell me up front, if not, don't tell me.

Your titles include the word Canada. Are you just selling in CA? If not, remove the Canada. OR for a year, you might consentrate on the Canadian market.

Include testimonials on the pages.

Home page...
Get rid of "Welcome" on home page.
make the top of the page, look more like http://babybouquetsandgifts.com/Sugar_Spice.html
Put photo of a baby on the right side of the top of the page.

So much of the home page is words. If you have products, I'd look to put more of the specific products on the page.

Maybe check out the better wedding product sites to see how they set up the home page.

You make Americans have to do extra work to find out how much to pay. I understand why. However, the more clicks someone has to make, the more they'll click off - I'd list CDN/USA prices.

On this page http://babybouquetsandgifts.com/Sugar_Spice.html you tell me that: At times, it may be necessary to substitute an article of clothing - the substitution would be a piece of clothing of equal value or greater value. Get rid of that. You're chasing away business. If someone orders something and you don't have it, give them the choice of their money back or another item. Then have them make the choice.

http://babybouquetsandgifts.com/Testimonials.html
Get permission to use the persons full name, city/state-providence/country. That's more credible.

I would put this on the bottom of every page or maybe underneath your navigation bar.

"Complimentary gift wrapping and gift card included with each order!"

I can't tell what products are in each basket. I know you "write" what they are, but your viewers need to see what they are.

And your site has a 0/10 rating in Google, meaning that you haven't submitted it to search engines. Learn more at www.TheResourceQueen.com look for Search Engines under Ecommerce.

OK That's some of what I see.

Thank you Maria for your comments.

From what you are saying I would just about have to build a new web site and at this stage that is not possible. I can see what you mean when you suggested a Wedding photograhy but as I say although that would be great it is not possible.

I did do market research with a number of different people.

I don't understand that you can't tell what the products are there are pictures of them under each basket.
And yes Canada is my main market for the next 12 months, even though I get orders from Australia,Singapore and Norway because so many people have family living in Canada.

I am at present getting the site optimised.

Best Wishes

Hi Kiwigirl;

As you have learned, there are a great many ideas on to "improve" you traffic. I would agree that eBay would certainly be a sound target to market through, but I would strongly recommend you go looking for links.

I have found (being based in Canada as well) that there are a great many free resources and link exchange opportunities, and I am not referring to Link Directories. I would send emails and introductions to complimentary companies who market to the same customer base. Maybe wedding sites, gift resource directories, corporate incentive companies and so forth.

I think you will find some favorable "partnerships" who can help you build your business.

Hope this helps.

You have a very nice testimonial near the bottom of the page. I would move it to the top where you currently have "unique gift bouquets made with wonderful surprises." You should still have room for that copy although it would need to be smaller. However, I think it would look better a bit smaller anyway.

Testimonials are a great marketing tool, so it's to your benefit to make it as prominent as possible. If people have to scroll to see it, many of your visitors will never know it's there. (You could still leave the testimonial where it is at the bottom of your page.)

Put your URL on everything, and mention your website at every opportunity. Since your URL is composed of several words, try capitalizing each one so your website address is recognizable at a glance. This can make a big difference since many people will only glance at a business card, ad, etc. If you're printing anything in color, you could make each word in your URL a different color.

Speaking of business cards, carry them everywhere. If you have family members and friends who will help you market your business, mail several cards to each of them.

You could print the back of your card with a testimonial. Then, include a coupon code for people to order online. That gives them the incentive to at least keep the card, or maybe even pass it along to someone who might be interested.

Here are some of my ideas on your business and some commentary on posts.

e-bay: Great place, but use it as a way to drive traffic to your website don't become an e-bay store, your product has potential for more upscale potential with the right market.

Canadian dollar/US dollar pricing is a good idea, you will only use one type of currency in the end, your cart total will be the problem for U.S. Citizens, maybe have a quick converter tool on the site.

Validate your HTML: you have errors including non closed </p tag should look like this </P>

It would be worth contacting an SEO/SEM Search Engine Optimizer/Search Engine Marketer if you have a marketing budget. We routinely fix code errors when contacted, it is very common with site builder programs.

PPC would work out as well, and is quick to get up running, since you are not a full seasonal business quick is not an issue for the holidays. An SEO can help you save money here, Yahoo and Google will also help set you up I believe.

* You products * Packaging *

It was hard for me to tell what I was looking at, I thought they were flowers, so good job on realism but this can hurt too, a lot.

Here is how:

1. If I show up to the site not looking for flowers or not interested I would just leave.

2. I would be unaffected by the creativity of your product because I never realized what it was.

3. I would never tell anyone about it because I never realized what it was. (referrals)

4. I would never consider it a good gift item for someone I knew - because I never realized what it was.

**Multiply ME(1) x 100 (visitors) x 10+ (referrals) a month = 1000 people a month spreading the word, knowing about your product etc.

This is not a real formula but you get what I mean.

Packaging and Professional Photos is very important for your product, I would definitely contact a packing professional or product marketing specialist in packaging.

(why not make baskets that look like baby carriers or strollers: get them professionally made too - not cheap but this is a big picture outlook for increasing profits by effective branding)

* New Web Site *
Not necessary but is a consideration if you are going to try to re-brand if you find that talking with a package/marketing professional or looking back at your brand identity.

* Why you should re-design *
You are using a lot of images for the design (not talking about your product photos), background images, top banner images etc. web developers use CSS not all images to make something look like it is an image.

Also SEO is better done from the ground up. (you do need some SEO work on the site)

Well that is a lot to digest, we have worked with many clients building web sites here in NY as well as around the U.S. and have seen the mistakes and misconceptions that people have about a website as well as how people perceive their own product. It is hard to look in from an outside perspective, that is why we ask others.

Hope I was helpful,

Kiwigirl,

I am interested in learning how much success you have had with your site and what techniques you used. You received a lot of great advice. I took a look at your website and I thought it was very well presented, and beautiful gift baskets. Online exposure is a great tool, provided your site obeys the rules.

I do have a few suggestions for your website:
1)Perhaps you can reduce the size of your logo - on 800x600 res. it is HUGE. While many people use the native res. of 1024x768, some use 800x600, for them it's a bit overwhelming
2)The title meta tag on your main page's code could use a bit of work, a bit spammy. A Search Engine no-no
3)Your H1 tag - which is presented at the very top edge of the first page - seems a bit out of place and appears spammy. At first I thought these were links. I would suggest something like "Unique baby gift baskets" as your H1 tag, placed at the beginning of your first paragraph, then expand from there.
4) Keywords are very important to attract your targeted audience to your website. They must be placed within the content of your website pages. Baby gift baskets, as one key phrase, is a very competetive phrase to target within search engines. While it is important to target for this phrase, it is also important to determine why your baby gift baskets are better than everyone else's. This will allow you to come up with keywords and keyphrases that will really attract people to purchase your products.
5) Remember: all of your website's pages are potential 'landing pages', pages that someone may find while doing an internet search. All pages should be optimized.

OK, enough said for now. I would be happy to assist further if you would like. I am a Search Engine Optimizer (I call it website optimizer), trying to get started on my own, and would be happy to assist. Please e-mail me if you would like more info.

Go into some specialty gift stores that may lease consignment shelves to display your products in a mall, or a florist for that matter - everyone wants tos end a gift, and a florist can suggets your product, and will if they're getting a small piece of it, and it's already made.

It's very difficult to get this type of item out there, very slow going. 800-flowers started small, then expanded into 800-cookies, 800-fillintheblank.

Try some google ad words and see if you get some traffic... you can set up a very small budget to start it, and turn it on/off easily. Search engines will be key for you traffic-wise to your site.

my .02 cents
