No documentation = no deduction

Even if the types of deductions you claim are typically accepted, if you don’t have documentation such as receipts and expense diary entries to prove the expense actually occurred, your deduction may be disallowed. Keep in mind that some of the easiest tax deductions are those you can claim if you just bother to keep records of your daily business-related activities, such as mileage and meals. Have the data ready to answer vehicle questions

To illustrate how serious the IRS is about wanting you to keep detailed records of the miles you use your vehicle for business. Here are the questions they ask:

  • When did you place your vehicle in service for business purposes (month, day and year)
  • How many total miles did you drive during the year? How many of those were for business and how many were for commuting?
  • Was your vehicle available for personal use during off-duty hours?
  • Do you or your spouse have another vehicle for personal use?
  • Do you have evidence to support your deduction?
