Help 'Em Remember with Handouts
Finally! The Wilderness Adventures retail outlet has invited you to present to them about your line of wind-up, waterproof cappuccino-makers. What an opportunity! With that retail outlet, you'll distribute your product in 17 new venues.
Your perfect pitch runs thirty minutes; they've given you ten. Too much information; too little time. What do you do without chopping yourself in half?
Use handouts.
You can cram a lot more info on a page than in a presentation. Once you've drained your brain, pick out key points to highlight. The information on your handouts should relate to your presentation -- don't throw your audience any written curves about how to use your product in the Arctic if your presentation focuses on South America. Provide "extra" information, but make sure it corresponds to what you're delivering in the flesh.
Use bullet points or outlines to make information easy to read. Want to really impress them? Use your spreadsheet program to generate cool graphs and charts. People love those. Color coded -- all the better!
Other ideas:
- Create a glossary of terms.
- Fashion a price list with product features.
- Design a fact sheet, or a FAQ (frequently asked questions) sheet -- whichever suits your fancy.
- Give company background.
- Have them complete a customer needs assessment.
- If you're trying to get people to take action, list the steps they need to take.
People don't always get what you're saying the first time around. Handouts can reinforce your message effectively without being redundant. As one young banker lamented at a handout-less presentation, "If I don't have a list, how can I file my report?"
Keep in mind audiences like stuff. Give them something to take home, and chances are you'll be hearing from them again soon.
