Who Owns Your Image? Make Sure You Do!
Taking pictures is big business. Photographers can make thousands by capturing a big star in a shot that millions want to see. But you don't have to worry unless you're royal or famous, right? Not necessarily true.
If you pay for pro photos to promote your business, you don't automatically own the rights to reproduce those pictures (even of yourself!) wherever and however you want.
So, when you have pictures taken of you, your team, or even your product, ask questions before saying, "Cheese!" For example, who will own the negatives? Often pro photographers keep the negatives and sell you just a few prints. And even when the prints land in your hands, you may not get the copyright.
To keep matters legit, print Idea Cafe's Copyright Release Form for Photographs below. It will help you guarantee that the portrait on your brochure doesn't become your criminal mug shot!
This release form is designed for you to send to the photographer or studio for their signature giving you permission to reproduce a photograph(s). At the top, fill out the to/from section, and specify which photos you wish to have permission to reproduce.
Then, customize the first paragraph with the appropriate information. Be sure to specify what sizes you will need and how many. Lastly, check off what the photograph(s) will be used for.
Tip: Enclose a note asking for their signature on the form and include a self-addressed stamped envelope for the photographer to conveniently return the release form to you. If you're under deadline, be sure and mention it. You may also want to include your phone number for any questions the photographer may have.
