"hiring employees vs Independant contractors"

I have a house cleaning business that has steadily been growing. I would like to be able to continue this pattern, but will be needing help soon. I am trying to figure out the best approach for a new business to take when looking for help.

I am concerned that if I hire help that there would be a lot of costs involved, plus providing health insurance. What have other peoples experiences been when hiring employees. Do you need to provide health insurance? I am thinking that Obama will mandate it.

I have been told that 15% of small businesses that have independant contractors help them are being audited. I am not the best record keeper, so this is a scary thought to me.

Any thoughts?

Whether you hire independents or employees for your housecleaning business, you'll need to check references and get criminal records (20 years if possible.) You'd be surprised at the number of criminals who try to get hired by housecleaning services! Also, independent contractors may try to take your customers, more so then employees would.

You'll have more control over an employee. Be certain to have an employee handbook and cleaning procedures manual ready to issue before you start hiring.

You'll find great information at MaidDocs.com -- read all the free information under "Informative Articles." There are links to government agencies and online resources.

Good Luck!
Gwen
