"starting a website"

I'm putting together a website. I don't want to say what it is just yet, but even so, my question is, how do I get people to find out about it without expensive advertising? I know word of mouth is always helpful, and I don't want to do a mass email because of it most likely being shown as spam, so what else can I do?

Thanks!

Hello,

I don't know what you define as "expensive advertising" since "expensive" in many cases is a relative word. However, you may want to consider the following (some may or may not work specifically for your busines):

1 - Word of mouth

2 - Participating in online bulletin board discussions

3 - Making your own flyers

4 - Include your business information in your email signature.

5 - Sponsored (pay-per-click) advertising

6 - Search engine optimization

7 - Networking on websites such as Idea Cafe, LinkedIn, and Ryze.

Remember, it's about how effective your strategy is, not always about how much cash you have in front of you to invest. Cash can be acquired.

For example: It's a smarter decision to invest $2,000 in a marketing campaign and receive a $15,000 ROI (return on investment) than to spend $50 and have nothing to show for it.

Another option is to invest $2,000 of your TIME and receive a $15,000 ROI. What your time is worth is totally up to you. It is also critical to understand that if you can hire someone to do something for you for less than what you would spend in TIME, as a smart business owner, it would be a wise decision to take advantage of it.

Hope this helps.

You won't be spamming if on your web site you include an ezine subscription form. For example, do a search for PHP List, which is a free program.

You won't be spamming if you mail a letter to all your friends, colleagues, etc. about your business opening...

And you'll gain pre-qualified visitors to your site if you write articles on the subject of your site and post them to article banks or article directories.
