"Getting a Press Release out - HELP PLEASE!"

Hello everyone,

I just wrote my press release for Biscuits by Lambchop (dog treats). I sent it to AP and a couple of free online services but I am at a loss for how to get it out to 'the right' people, now.

The press agent I was going to use did not pan out, at the last minute.

Any advice on where and how to send would be much appreciated!

Thank you in advance.

A blurb from the release is below.

BISCUITS BY LAMBCHOP LAUNCHES GLUTEN-FREE DOG BISCUITS IN JAPAN

NEWS RELEASE
May 21, 2007
New York, New York

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

With pet food recalls expanding to other countries, pet owners across the globe are becoming more proactive with what they feed their pets. Japan is no exception.

When Mr. Yasunori Tanaka, Pet Products Director, Senko Corporation Japan was looking for a natural, low phosphorus dog treat, he found New York City based Biscuits by Lambchop? (BBL) met all his needs. But in this time of mounting pet food recalls due to tainted wheat gluten, rice protein and now questionable corn and soy proteins, finding a treat that is also free of these ingredients can be a challenge. That?s why when Mr. Tanaka found BBL he knew he had found a perfect match for PetWalk, his specialty pet store. BBL has seen a large increase in sales since the recalls and found it is filling a greater need than ever imagined, being able to provide such a treat.

HI Annette,

The piece looks really great! Just one thing... you need to PAY a reputable PR company and or Release Agency to get the piece in front of the "RIGHT EYES" this is not gorilla marketing, the only way to accomplish this task is to pay a well seasoned expert with CONNECTIONS!!!

Thank you. I paid on PR.com to have it released. I could not find anyone in my specialty area and was afraid of wasting a lot of money.

There is no news to your press release. It is simply an ad. The most important question a press release has to answer is: Is this news?" And it isn't; if it is, it isn't clear.

Before spending money on releasing this release as is, I would hire a copywriter to write the press release that really tells the story.

Ultimately, who is Mr. Tanaka? If nobody cares, nobody is going to pick up the article.

Once you have a press release worthy of being picked up, then you should definitely send it to every media outlet in your city and state. Local media love local success stories. Also, send it out to any and all media associated with dogs. Cat and Dog magazine, etc.

Then, to be sure it gets picked up by every RSS feed on the internet, submit it to all the free online PR sites.

Then, if you still haven't gotten the desired coverage you expected, hire a PR person who is familiar with your field and then pay them. There is nothing worse than paying good money to a PR person to POST your press releases and still getting nothing from them. (Learn how to do it for free if you can't find a specialist in your field.)

(I'll say it again, because I know they read these, for the powers that be, here at Idea Cafe, a PR release section would be a great tool for members.)

Oh... and last thing... Congratulations and good luck.

on the contrary her product is news worthy and she is serving a Niche! I would look for a local PR company and send out the release , follow up with phone calls to all the desks that received your release!

IDEA: Maybe make a Cute little Treat Basket and send it out to all your local new editors/reporters!!!

I didn't say the story wasn't newsworthy, I said that as it is written, it isn't news. There is a difference.

The question always arises how to promote a business globally. This is quite a huge endeavor that you shouldn't even try. For your business promotion you should be thinking locally and not globally. You are doing business and are a resident of a specific geographic area. Local media in your geography are always interested in presenting to their readers, listeners, or watchers news and information about people of interest in their area. So let's say that you are a virtual assistant in Cleveland, or a financial consultant in Miami, or Biscuits by Lambchop in New York. Start with your local daily newspapers. The editors want and need to know about the newsworthy happenings at your business. So the Cleveland Plain Dealer wants to know about the fund raising activities that the VA has planned, or the Miami Herald will print the information seminar that the financial consultant has planned, or the New York Daily News wants to know that your American company is doing business with Senko Corporation in Japan.

Then something remarkable happens. National media always looks to local media for news and information that they can present as well. Think about the local stories that everyone was talking about because CNN or Fox News picked it up. The list is endless. This list could and should include your business. Start to take the steps locally that could result in ever greater positive publicity for you which of course leads to more and more business.

Much Success,
Michele

Thanks for all the replies! I am planning on sending a bag of biscuits to local papers and dog magazines. I have been searching for "pet food recalls" on newspaper websites to try and find the right editors to send to. I have e-mailed the press release to them as well. I also sent out a newletter to my clients with an announcement of a new treat being introduced, and the press release. Never know who you're doing business with and maybe someone is hooked up and interested.

Question, since the release is not a few days old, do I just write a cover letter and include a bag of biscuits, my brochure, business card and a copy of the press release?

Any advice on the cover letter?

Thanks again.

I would focus on the Gluten Free!!! and simply add your Tag line to the cover. Use as few words as possible.

People love animals so maybe incude an image of a cute puppy on the cover!

Good luck!

ALSO: Your website URL in you Signature is wrong "bch" not "bhc"
