I am making an "exit page" for one of my sites that allows me to ask the visitor why they are leaving or to offer something that peaks their interest when that interest has failed. What do I need to offer or ask? What would be better--a quick survey with a gift or a special offer to funnel them back to a sale? Any ideas?

Thanks, Tina, I feel the same way BUT a quick click to "cancel" is all it takes. You must understand that after seeing 30-40 abandoned shopping cart entries I am dying to get someone to tell me what sent them on their way. Since they are leaving anyhow, one more note asking for their opinion will make me know what needs to be changed! The "rate my site" button has given me a few comments that have been a world of help. Why not reward those who let off some steam and tell me what they think? They may even get free shipping or something. Their opinion is really, really important to me.

I would recommend installing google analytics, if you haven't already. Among many other features, it will tell you what page(s) are the last page people visit. Though it won't tell you why people are leaving, at least you'll figure out your problem pages.
