When business ask for my tax id # are they wanting my state or federal tax Id #?

Are you Sole Prop. providing a service to them? If you have a federal tax id #, they require this for 1099 purposes. If you don't have a federal tax id #, then your social security # is required.

I'm not really sure what a state id # is...I thought my driver's license was my state id...which should not really relate to conducting business.
