951, Anyone start their own small gym/personal training/fitness center?
Posted by SweatyGirl, Wed Aug-31-11 04:06 AM
Howdy!
I am really interested in starting my own small personal training gym.
Not membership based, but more like one-on-one by appointment.
I am not interested in a franchise. But I do want a storefront and a nice gym atmosphere.

My question is - how much is this going to cost me?

Does anyone have experience with this? I know that the location, and the equipment fees are going to vary drastically... but I am just looking for someone to say - "I did this, and it cost me this much"

Is there anyone out there?

Thanks so much!

- Shannon

Hi Shannon,

I bought a business I worked for as a trainer in Stamford, CT in 2006.
1st year with rent was about 80k+payroll.
Trainers received $40-65 per session worked
My rent on 1st studio was 1500 per mo. w/electric & showers(really cheap)
Equipment 40k
Existing clients 20k

We were soley for elite athletes but began to branch out to general public. Eventually I split the two.

I sold the gyms & I am starting an all natural supplement company.

I have a couple of questions.

1.What kind of styles are you looking to incorporate?-(how will you train your clients-high tech, old school, bodyweight, outdoors, mma, crossfit, etc.?)

Knowing your niche will help towards pricing out your equipment.

2.How will you market?

3.Will you be by yourself or hiring trainers as subcontractors?

4.Do you currently have clients that will follow you?

5.Friends in the industry? When I bought the gym in 06 I had been a Trainer for 11years. My wife has a background in nutrition and also helped by teaching yoga.
Our Dogs also used to herd the slackers back onto pace during long trail runs. haha-every little bit really helped.

I hope this helped.
