Drop shipping most often refers to a product being shipped from another location than that ordered from. In ecommerce parlance it means that orders you receive are passed on (generally to a manufacturer or distributor) who actually ships the product to the customer. The opposite is where you house inventory and ship on order. Most drop shipments occur under agreements between the shipper (manufacturer, distributor, etc.,) and the seller. For example you may execute a purchase order to a widget maker for one thousand units to be sold and shipped one and two at a time.

I hope this helps.

Ken,

As a wholesale, if I provide my customers with drop ship service, do I use their shipping account with say like UPS or other services?

thanks,

Lanell:

You would ship the way the customer will pay or has paid for shipping. Sometimes just a shipping and handling charge is levied and then you decide how to ship the order.
