3918, Building computers

Just wondering if anyone here knows much about selling computers. I know just about everything I need to in order to build them, just need to look into a few things and I am pretty sure I can handle building them. However I don't know much about selling them. Is this a good business to get into? Is it profitable? I really would not even need to buy anything until I get an order, then I can take the money from that order and buy everything I need to build the computer. This is something I know I'd enjoy doing and is some thing that is probably better than the other ideas I asked about before.

I think there could be quite a bit of money in it, but the big question you need to ask yourself, is how will you be different from Dell or any of the other competitors out there?
Also in order to really go anywhere you will need a website and possibly an office or physical store location.

You can start in your garage which is how Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and Michael Dell started... well... Dell started in his dorm room but, it's not all that different :)

Yes, there is lots of money in it... but, like the other poster said, what are you offering that's different? Okay, so you can build a computer, but most of the people who need those services, are technically knowledgeable where they can also build the computer.

So, I think you should sit down and think about more about your idea. Who is your target market? Are you trying to market for the masses? If so, how are you going to appeal to the masses? Or, is your target someone more specific? Is it a young kid who doesn't know as much but needs a gaming computer? Are you going to allow this kid to pick out all the specific parts and then you guarantee to put them together (please say no to this because this would be impossible given that there are many components that are not compatible generally because of software issues). Or, is your target market going to be businesses who need specialized help?

Hope this helps a bit :)

From reading your post, I think you need to put a lot more thought into this before you jump into the deep end. Not to say don't follow your idea, because if it is what you want to do, you will find a way.

As far as the money part, you probably should have some "up front money" to help you with those little "suprises" that are sure to pop up.

Put your ideas on paper in a business plan, get with someone who could help you logically go through the process.

One idea, maybe start by "rebuilding" rather than build from scratch. Take the profits of the first few and go from there. Here are a few key elements you may want to read.
