Formal education certainly has its place but if you are happy with your ability and don't feel the need for a qualification then you have nothing to lose by testing the waters. Start building a portfolio of designs, put the designs onto fabric and see how well you go.
As the previous poster suggested, start selling on Ebay, go to craft fairs, even look into your own little boutique. Approach established design houses with samples of your work, even if it's just to get expert advice.
If you are determined and motivated to succeed then you have nothing to lose.
