Hey all,

I'm fighting with the decision of starting my own line of women's clothing. I just need a little advice. I'm currently in school obtaining a degree in nursing (that's my back-up if fashion designing doesn't work for me), but I don't have the formal training to become a fashion designer, but I do have a God given talent of drawing, it amazes me sometimes how well I can draw and I've never been taught how to draw by anyone. My question is it feasible for me to enter this industry without being formally trained? I have the business knowledge to know how to run the business, but I don't have the training in the aspect of someone teaching how to draw or learn fabrics, etc; I've learned that on my own and through experience. What do you think?

Why not?

Put some stuff together and sell it on Ebay - or take it to a craftshow and see how stuff sells. Clearly, you're not going to go to Macy's (at least not right away) but start out small and see how people respond to your work :-)

If you're good at it you're good at it - formal training or not. Oh, but you may check that ego just a bit, especially for someone with no experience :D

Formal education certainly has its place but if you are happy with your ability and don't feel the need for a qualification then you have nothing to lose by testing the waters. Start building a portfolio of designs, put the designs onto fabric and see how well you go.

As the previous poster suggested, start selling on Ebay, go to craft fairs, even look into your own little boutique. Approach established design houses with samples of your work, even if it's just to get expert advice.

If you are determined and motivated to succeed then you have nothing to lose.

Then, order Kathleen's book and read it. You will have the best, most true-to-life education on designing, manufacturing and selling clothing that you could ever get. It is tough but it can be done.
