I have been tossing around ideas on how to start a baking business from home. (Yes, I've looked into the laws and restrictions regarding this type of work)

I've recently thought of yet another idea, and I'd like to get some feedback on it:

What about starting a baking business that offers to bake cookies (cupcakes, brownies) for moms to send in with their kids to school for birthdays, in-class parties, etc.
There are plenty of moms who: don't like to bake, are not good at it, or are good at it but simply don't have the time.
That's where I'd come in.... yes, they could run to the grocery store, but let's face it, homemade cookies are just better. Also, I would obviously have to price them to compete with local bakeries.

Just a thought.

What do you think of this idea??

Thanks :)

I think it is a neat idea, but there are restrictions as to the sort of projects like this that the schools will be allowed to offer and short of mass marketing to hit parents, without the support of the schools will be a consideration.

My daughter had a highly allergic boy in her elementary school class and we parents were not allowed to send food cooked in our kitchens into the classroom for such things, so the boy's mother offered to cook the "treats" that the parents would have otherwise sent in.

To my knowledge, none of the other parents took her up on her offer, although she had the support of the teachers and the school, in that they sent letters home offering the service.

My point is that you might want to consider the "peanut free" angle; assuming your kitchen is peanut free, or in the event that it isn't.

As a mom, my son's school will not allow us to bring in any food items unless they are prepackaged with the ingredients clearly listed due to the whole allergy issue the previous poster mentioned. It sounds like a decent idea as long as your local schools, preschools, etc., do not have the restriction ours has or unless you are able to go that extra step of having the ingredients listed.
