hi, I don't know much about this but the little i have seen is the trick is to rent them out for cheap, allowing people to rent more, aim: smaller profit per video but larger volumes of videos rented thus increasing your total profits.

We have video store in our area and they charge R16 per video, there is only one video store that i have ever heard or seen of that sells same videos for R5 and their client base is massive, question: where would u go?

Dear Tonya,
my first inclination to you on starting a video busines, is Don't.
But first a couple of questions: where are you located, and how close to the nearest video rental. If you are in Alaska, it might still be profitable, otherwise it is not profitable anymore, as least with VHS. Also check out the competition, especially if there is a library or gas station renting videos... They will always be cheaper or free.
My history, my parents started a video store 18 years ago, and should have gotten out at least 4 years ago. Ever since the DishTv, Cable, and Satelite have really become available, they are barely surviving. It takes a really long time to get a good size inventory, although prices have dropped enormously for the new releases. They have recently gotton into DVD's, which is more profitable considering the cost of them, but they haven't made their money back on them.
Feel free to write me for any more questions...or specifics, here or at my email.

Dear Julie thanks for your input to my question.

We live in Georgia, and there is no video store located in the area that we live in. The county where we stay is steadily building new homes, and we thought it would be profitable since there isn't one for a couple of miles away. But I guest it's a lot to consider just like with any business.

Thanks again Julie for taking the time to share with me your experience about being a video store owner.

I have also been thinking about opening a video/dvd rental store in my town. Our town has one video store that is alright but the people that work their look and act like idiots. Therefore I feel a more professional store would be good for our community. My only question is where have you found to order videos? Do you order them from catalogs or do you order them from a certain company? If you find out please e-mail me at mot@trvnet.net

Thanks for your help!!

9. "Legality and other things"
Posted by Julie G on 11:46:31 7/06/2003
There really aren’t any distribution companies left. We mostly get our videos from Best Buy, Walmart, and whoever has the best price. There are a few distributors out there for specialized videos, but not many. Blockbusters and the large guys buy directly from the movie companies and of course get the better price, but a start-up of course would never buy in those quantities.

As far as laws or regulations against renting, from a dvd or vhs product view, there are none, other than large group viewing. It is illegal to show a video to large groups of people outside of your own home, i.e. showing it to a class of kids at school. If we know a teacher is renting a video, like Shrek for instance, and showing it to their class, we won't rent it to her. Because, one, all those kids have now seen the video and their parents wont rent it, so there goes 30 rentals down the drain for us, and two, it is illegal to do so. Just read the warnings on the front of any copyrighted video.
Check out your local or county laws if you plan on renting anything. If you plan on renting any thing that would be considered adult, or X-rated, most villages/townships have anti-obscenity laws on the books, and that applies to video store rentals. Of course, in my personal opinion, more money is made on childrens videos and family videos anyway, then you don't have to deal with moral implications on our souls.

Legally, you also have to deal with renting to kids, which is a big deal in a small town, especially during the summer. They will try to get away with everything.

Any more questions, let me know.
Julie

We are legal Distributors, and we have such low pricing as we purchase in bulk per month, say about 5000 pieces or more.

What wound you up? Why are there always people like you to be so judgemental? This is an open forum to toss out ideas, not to lambast people you question your ideas. Why are you attacking me personally? I have been in the video industry long enough to know the differences between legit distributors and the others who play on the sidelines. Johnson, if you are so legit, why didn't you post your website, phone number, or address, so we all could check your company out? If you are as you say you are, why don't you be upfront with all of us? And if you are legit, then I wouldn't mind checking you out to buy movies also.

Julie,
Thanks for all the information you've been posting here.

You said that large group viewing outside your own home is the only thing you can't do -- does this mean that video stores don't have to pay ROYALTIES? If so, this is something completely different from what I thought, and it would certainly make everything easier to track -- not to mention more profitable.

Are there special computer programs you can buy that track clients and movies and everything you need to know about your inventory?

thanks,
Allison

Greetings from the WEST!

>>>> YOUR ADVICE IS WELCOME.
(particularly, if you know of what you speak)

I, too, am considering starting or purchasing a video store. Mainly, because there are many entertainment options out there for families that are not being fully pursued.

Chains will offer more quantity and less quality and specialization, as time goes on.

I live in a fairly conservative small town with less than 10,000 people. We are surrounded by two other small towns (also with less than 10k population).

Although there is a library and a grocery store that both rent videos, and a WALMART, a BLOCKBUSTER, and another low-class CHAIN STORE in the next town (less than 5-miles away), I feel there may be an opportunity to create a NICHE market with the locals in my own town, and the 2 nearby towns.

The town that has all of the major businesses: the corporate chain stores and restaraunts and the the two other video stores is across a very busy highway. There is sort of a mental demarcation there with the locals.

Kids can't safely ride their bikes across the highway, and older folks prefer to stay on this side of the world.

Our side of the highway has nearly NO businesses...certainly nothing corporate. When people buy groceries they do so in the next town, across the highway.

Knowing full well --- that there is competition, I still am considering my business plan. To compensate for the competition, I would like to....

1. ally with local businesses to promote each other. (have restaraunt give coupon to my store to each visitor...I will do the same).

2. offer more FAMILY PROGRAMS, and try to capture LATINO market (growing here in the west). Ensure that SENIORS also have some selections.

3. create an environment that is fun for local kids to visit, both with their parents, and if they just ride over on their bike.

4. offer GAME rentals (as a subscription club?)

5. sell SELECTED new DVDs, SELECTED new Audio CDs, AUDIOBOOKS for commuters, and a small amount of movie related gift-type products.

6. of course snacks and beverages

7. possibly share my space with a coffee cart or a flower vendor or some such....(i saw one store in Massachusetts that did TANNING and VIDEO and COFFEE BAR. (sounds exhausting, but seemed to work).

8. take advantage of smalltown attitude to try and get people to choose a fun, specialized, local and knowledgeable store over the "other guys".

There will always be people who purchase every single item they ever could need at WALMART or TARGET....but I think there are STILL people in the world that would like to walk into a store and get a big HELLO and a video suggestion from a familiar staff, in a store that is not blinking and flashing and pounding with multiple sources of movie noise.

CAN YOU ENVISION A STORE THAT PROVIDES excellent service, general and specialized titles, and is fun to visit without being overwhelming?

WOULD YOU SHOP THERE (in your own town) or stop at Blockbuster because you just happened to be driving by on your way home from the grocery?

ADVICE????

>>>>>>>>STAY TUNED......

18. "Tonya, find a niche"
Posted by Mark on 08:40:22 7/10/2003
I have also thought of starting a video-renting service. Living in Boston makes it very hard as all the big guys are in every neighborhood as well as small independents who struggle to compete.

But I thought of a niche that I didn't see fulfilled yet. I just need info on buying the videos/DVDs to rent out.

My niche is to locate a small booth or shop at a major transportation center for daily commuters (in boston we have two train stations, North Station and South Station.) My idea was to have a booth where you pick up your movie on your way to your train home and drop it off the next morning on your way from your train in.

My only problem -- as with most small biz ideas -- is finding a supplier and finding start up money.

Anyone have info on what it takes to have a good inventory of DVDs (videos are on their way out?) on hand? Julie G.?

Mark

This other video store is also a pawn shop, so many people are reluctant to go there.I'm needing info on start up inventory,ie types,#'s of videos that I should have, maybe start up money also.

Billy --

Your niche and my niche are similar. You and your wife want to start a video store where you deliver to your customers.

My idea is to locate the store (a kiosk) in a commuter rail station to catch the customer on his/her way in and out of the city to and from work.

Not delivery, but catch them on a route they use often and regularly.

I'd do it in a heartbeat but for the investment of all those DVDs/Videos.

I have wanted to open a vid store for years, but, talking to the guy at my local vid store years ago, he said he had to pay mega bucks for the new releases and couldn't just pop into the local Wal-Mart or whereever to buy them. Is this no longer the case? You can purchase the movies wherever and re rent them? If that is true it would be awesome, someone please reply soon and let me know about this as I have an opportunity here to buy a vid store and don't want to loose it. Thanks...Mark

31. "Making your video store different than ALL others..."
Posted by Troy White on 20:20:25 9/29/2003
Hi Tonya, You certainly sparked some reaction to your post!

There is still money to be made in videos... forget about what some say. There is money to be made in any industry if you learn to do one thing right... become a marketing mastermind!

Learn not only how to run an efficient business but learn (more importantly) how to make your business different and stand out from the crowd.

There are many video stores in the average city. How many of those that you have visited offer something unique?

Not many is my guess (I know that in my city of a million I have only seen one that is even remotely different).

Come up with some unique positioning ideas and marketing ideas and you will do very well.

Here is a couple that come to mind.

Provide reviews of the new releases that come in. Have it as a free service you provide online (at your web site-where they can also reserve movies) and offline as a handout. This shows people you really do care about the movies, you watch them, and you go out of your way to make sure they find the right movie. Most staff sit around throughout the day watching the movies anyhow, why not review them? And put some personality into the reviews - like it or love it - people will get yoru reviews just to read them. Also, you could use the handout as a coupon for discounts or specials or a free bag of popcorn or ....

Provide "packages" for people who don't want to think about what movie to rent. Have a fright night package complete with the scariest movies of all times, candles, popcorn and some fake blood. Have a funny movie night with the best of the best dumb movies, or hilarious movies with whoopie cushions, popcorn, funny glasses etc. Kids bday movie package with silly string, movies, green slime etc. I am sure you can think of numerous packages to put together!

Delivery - you could work out an arrangement to have a local kid deliver movies to peoples homes for an extra $5 or so. Make it so they need to rent 3 movies to get this service. At the time of their order and delivery request - offer to deliver them pop, popcorn, chips etc (you could even work out a deal with the local pizza joint - you take extra orders for them in exchange for a few dollars per order). People will pay for the service - if the service is valuable - and add-ons make it valuable.

Offer a deal when they rent the new releases they can get unlimited old releases at $1 each. The older releases typically sit around collecting dust most of the time. This way people may rent a few extra movies and you put money in your pocket that would have never been there.

And lastly, make it a very comfortable setting for all. Have a seperate room with toys to throw the kids while the parents shop. Give out free popcorn samples or free small glasses of pop. Anything you do to make your business different will pay off huge in the end!

Hope it helps.
