"Advice on opening a Bridal Boutique"
Posted by Bridal Boutique on 14:02:49 9/17/2004
Hi, I am planning to open a bridal boutique next year in Central California. I just thought I would see if anyone has any insight into running a bridal shop. I would like to sell high-end (NO POLYESTER) gowns, high-end simple jewelry and have the best customer service in town. There are a few stores in this area that carry high-end gowns, but the customer service is atrocious and the "dressing rooms" look like prison cells. I know a lot about fashion, but not very much about retail. Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Susie,

I am also trying to get information about opening a bridal shop. If you have some information I would appreciate listening. Also, if I find any information that would be helpful to you, I will stay in touch. I do know that when ordering dresses you must order six of each type and that gets very costly. It has been suggested to me to find others to share the orders with and get two each. It is sufficient to have two sizes of each. Stay in touch...where are you located?

Sincerely,
Trish

I have had my shop open almost 5 years now and I am so glad that I did this, I am doing very well. I have exceeded my projections by alot. My advice would be to start small and add stock as you can see what the customers are going to buy, don't think that you have to have everything the day you open. Also, by starting small you don't have much debt. You can email me if you want to chat at Kris.bridalvision@hotmail.com

Posted by Yolanda on 06:02:04 7/30/2006
Hello email me at y2burse@aol.com
My business is called Affordable Photo's and Engraving By Yolanda.
Here is how my business works for me. I am a photographer started back in 2001, invested in all equipment. I then got interested in glass engraving I then invested in all that equipment, I do the toasting flutes, knife and server, etc...
Now that I am full time in my business which is home based at the moment I offer: Photography, Engraving, Favors, Printing & Graphic Services, Personalized Candy Bars, Decorations, Planning & Coordinating, Bridal Party Gift Basket.
The kicker is when a bride comes to my home and listen through the 2 hour presentation they do not have to go anywhere else why you ask because I have everything they need. And to make it even better instead of them wrecking their brain on finding a florist, caterer, etc... I have all those vendors on hand I set up their appointment and take them to the vendor or set up an appointment for the vendor to meet at my place of business. We should hook up and start a chain of wedding one time stop shop. Advertising works especially the magnetic signs on the car and word of mouth. I am in the process now of taking my business to a store front. I desire more exposure and more work. I plan to offer everything I mentioned above. My theory is to elimanate as much work as possible on my bride and groom.
email me back on my aol email.

Hi. I manage a retail store in Florida and just got married. My advise is to research the companies you plan to buy from a great one on cost and quality is Maggie Sottero, their dresses are satin and silk, their retail for a satin around 700 and silk 1200. The dresses are just amazing and I had to directly had to deal with the company as the customer to get my dress and they were amazing on customer service. The delivery time on the dress I ordered was 1 week. I buy for the store that I manage and be cafeful on the companies that you purchase from make sure the will give you dating on your purchases like between 30-90 days. This might not happen on your first purchase. The is a company that is called Crossroads that have the best toe rings for weddings. I got mine for my wedding and everyone loved it. The rep here is Suzanne Cell (214)535-5406, They retail here for 12.99 and sell better than any toe ring we have ever had. Well if you have any other questions email me.

I went searching for advice on opening a bridal shop and found you guys. I currently have a shop on mainstreet in Columbus Nebraska. I provide alterations for everyone in the family and specialize in bridal alterations. The bridal shop closed here in July, owner was crabby anyway. So I thought I would add bridal gowns, bridesmaids, MOB, FG's and prom. Currently I am looking at Alfred Angelo, Eden bridals, PC Mary's and Alexa Claire. Trying to get info from Mori Lee but can't seem to find a way so far.
This is a town of 25,000 about 90 miles from Omaha. There are three bridal shops in Norfolk which is an hour away.
How many dresses should I carry? How many designers? How many BM's? Shoes?
any help would be greatly appreciated!

The company Maggie Sottero is a wholesale company you also should check out bridal shows where all the vendors show up and you can look at all the samples of the dresses and access. there is a place called the Altanta Gift Apperal Show and they are a 3 building mall for wholesalers to purchase from the are online also, there is 11 stories in the buildings and the upcoming show is in April. I should have been more clear on my email, I purchased my dress from a bridal shop that tried to rip me off and they kept telling me that my dress was on back order this was thank-God about 4 months before my wedding and one of their shops went out of business and I thought the hell with this so I called the company, being in retail I know who and what to do to get ahold of the company directly. Well it turned out that they had my dress the entire time and waiting for payment from the bridal shop (turns out they weren"t paying their bills and ripping a bunch of people off.) Anyway I had them send my dress to a different bridal shop that I trusted and everything was fine. But I can say from experience that dealing with companies with orders at my store they were a great company to deal with. Also women don't like to hear the true size that they are in a wedding dress so this one shop orders the dresses in the correct size but doesn't tell the girls because some of them will make the store order dresses too small in the hopes of loosing weight and then well problems happen. The dress I got also came with a handbag which I loved. Also never rely on the date of arrival on the dress always plan on it to be a few weeks late and if there are reps for the dresses stay on top of all your orders with follow-up reps for the most part are lazy and only care about their commission. Well hope that helped and anything else let me know.

Hey, if you really want to open a Bridal-Boutique store go for it. Start small and build your way up. Diz into the business and you'll be surprise. Save up and big a good amount, then grow as you go. Don't get yourself into debt, like i said start small and as you grow you continue to purchase.

Found a website that wholesale wedding gowns starting a $199.00. This is great for people with low capital like myself. The minimum order is 5 dresses if its your first time.

I'm looking for a flea market to start boutique in. The lease is very cheap for starters just to get your name out. Some places rent spaces for as little as $100.00 a month depending on how many days you will need it. This is a thought for all the ladies looking for a bridal boutique. May be if I am some help someone will help me.

181. "Bridal Boutique"
Posted by Francesca Singh on 08:47:15 4/27/2006
Hello:

My name is Francesca and me and my mother are looking to open a very high end bridal boutique in Florida. We are currently in an area where there are only 4 bridal boutiques in the whole surrounding area which are about almost 2 hours away from where we are at.

We are looking to set it up in a brand new Main street area with a very wealthy clientele surrounding us. We are in the process of getting together a lease for a size of 2,500 square feet. Since it is a new building we have the option to go for a larger square footage if we desire.

Can you please give me any insight that you may have on starting up. I already have my corporation set up. What kind of licence will I be needing and where do I go to get them. Also would you recommend a larger space than 2,500 sq ft? We are going to be in the same area as a Country Club so we are also going to want to incorporate very high end evening dresses.

Any advice or suggestions that you may be able to give us would be so very appreciated. We have never done anything like this and are very excited but at the same time are completely lost. Thank you in advance. Please email me at francessingh@aol.com. Thanks again.

Best Regards,
Francesca Singh

This is my last try. I would like converse with SOMEONE who is experienced in the bridal business that can be helpful. I own a carpet cleaning business and will be willing to share any information that I can to help someone.

I desperately need another income stream. If you are in the Georgia area by all means contact me here. If I just get someone that wants to chit chat again I'll will try some place else. The clock is ticking and like others here, I want to really be of help to someoen and receive halp in return. Where can people go with the same goals and pick each others brain. There is plenty of money to be made in this world. Lets pull our brains together and stop being afraid to help someone. You get blessing from helping others. God Bless you all.

Dear Kris, I am a mother of two, wife to John. I worked in a small bridal boutique for a little more than 5 years when I was in high school, college than when I was first married. I am interested in trying to open my own shop where I live now. I understand the daily routine in "working" the store, however, I'm not educated on the "how to" run the store. I worked for a wonderful woman who had many connections in New York, I however, do not. I would like to know, start up costs, overhead, inventory, etc. any information would be helpful. Thank You for your time, I look forward to hearing from you!

Hi Kris,
I am inaterested in opening a Bridal Shop of my own. I am in the Tucson Arizona area (South Wes where it takes at least 45 minutes to see any kind of shops, malls and restaurants. I am eager to obtain as much information as possible. I have networked with a store fixture company and can get the racks and display cabinets for decent amounts. I need assistance in ordering gowns and head pieces. Wanting to start small and go form there.

I am in the area of town /county whre Quincernas are optimal and weddings come once a month. Great for business.

I would appreciate it if you could either direct me in the right direction or advise me on what I need to look out for. My plan is in the first stages.

Thanks,

Gloria

Hi,
My name is Angela.
This is my first time on the sight.
I donā€™t know what your income is at this time, but I strongly think that you should offer your services to potential clientele that is in a high income bracket,
That way you get the clientele to support your lifestyle and your growing business therefore releasing you and your staff from working so heard, you will also receive more fretful referrals and more frequent repeat customers in this income bracket.
If I where you I would team up with flourishing real estate companies and other companies that offer there clients such like services.
if you need more info just e-mail me at .
stevejhapelle@yahoo.com

I am going to open a Image consultant company that will provide in home and on location salon services, fashion styling and shopping trips.
The company will provide these services throughout the major cities in the U.S
Do you have any suggestions as to the best way to go about it?
Do you know where I can get a business plan dune at an affordable cost as well?

I can use all the help I can get. Help, help, help

Hi! Just passing through and saw this post. I, personally, don't have the experience of owning/operating a bridal store but am looking into discount bridal dresses as a business from my home.

However, as a CUSTOMER going into a bridal store, I can tell you what I'd like to see.

1) Smiling faces. Can't emphasize enough how important it is to me to feel like I'm welcome and not an interruption of someone's day. I'll be sure to come back.

2) I'd like to see nice displays. Not just your basic wedding gowns in a window but maybe theme wedding courts and a portfolio of weddings from your customers. Something real to look at (not a magazine) to get ideas and bounce them off of you to see where they land. I'd like to have a win-win relationship with the bridal boutique owner/operator.

3) Knowledgeable employees. No timid mouses and no bull-headed boutique-owner-wanna-be's. If I have a question, I want it answered in concise, clear terms that make sense. I will discuss figures with the owner but not the employee. I'd like to see team-play and smooth hand-off's.

4) It needs to smell pretty but not overwhelming. I'd like to see a stand in the middle where I try on my gown and can see me in the front and back mirrors (not just front mirrors). I'd like for people to fuss over me but not too much.

5) sincerity.

6) I'd like to see the business owner on the floor. This would mean that she/he already has a handle on the accounting end of the business and is relaxed enough to mingle with the clientele. So I'm thinking a really wonderful accountant would be in order.

7) a nice jewelry case. Nothing with so many things in it that I get confused at what I'm looking for. And please offer a wide range of items as well as styles. Hand-crafted items would be great!

8) knowing that, if you decided to take vacation for a week, your office manager/staff would take care of me as well as you would. Again, I would only discuss numbers with you or your office manager and would get all promises/estimates in writing.

9) I know this is probably asking for a lot, but I'd really like to see you or a staff member at my wedding to help me prepare my gown that I've just bought from you for a nominal fee or free service. (1 hour only as a requirement to help me prepare).

10) a Follow-up call after I come back from my honeymoon offering me additional services (wedding gown preservation, a scrapbook made of my wedding and/or honeymoon, bouquet preservation, etc.) Of course, I would expect these services to be outsourced from your office but would like to take care of the matter at your boutique instead of running to 4 or 5 different places.

Am I asking too much? I know a lot of this covers the customer service end but this is actually from the customer's perspective. I've heard a lot of good things on this forum about SCORE on getting plans and funding together. Seems they are a good resource for the business end.

Sarah

11. "Upscale"
Posted by Sarah on 20:34:04 10/26/2004
Upscaling your services will win you some really rewarding customers (IMHO). Being a one-stop-wedding-shop is just the thing. Take your basic business plan and expand/expound on it.

I.E.
Providing a conceriege who can get anything anytime anywhere at any price. (Might seem impossible but with the advent of the internet, "impossibles" turn into "drop-shipping" to your customer's homes or your shop).

Provide a small chapel for the wedding and a reception hall that's full of glamour and romance. Nothing but the best even for the young and broke clients. (Weddings are extremely special and personal to me).

Offer a "tea" area for the bachelorette parties or wedding showers with specialty cakes from an upscale bakery (I saw a bakery make little individual classy purses for a client's party once - all the purses were different styles and colors and worked out beautifully).

Hand-crafted invitations would be very nice.

I know this sounds like something out of a movie (The Wedding Planner comes to mind) but if you think about it, the Donald Trump's and Martha Stewart's of this world are out there and ready to spend big bucks to make their little girls' weddings an event to be remembered forever. It's a lot of work. I'm tired just writing this! But, I truly believe in the end, it will be well worth it to you and your business.

Sarah

Posted by Megan on 10:00:41 7/31/2005
Hi... i was just reading some of Sarah's ideas on customer service and she has some great ideas... I worked in a bridal shop back in minnesota and one of our policies is that you never leave your bride alone for more than 5 or 10 min... its a good idea that you are there to help them into wedding gowns since some are not easy to put on alone such as a dress with a corset back...listen to what she is looking for in a dress what she likes and doesnt like then go through your inventory and see what you have and show her anything you think she might like so be sure that you and your staff know what you have in stock. i hope that gives you some ideas too.

Be sure that you do your market research before opening your shop to be certain that your area can support a shop. I live in an area with 450,000 population within a 30 mile radius. We see bridal shops open and close all of the time. The area can support about 3 shops (they sell prom dresses and formal wear in addition to bridal gowns). There is a bridal shop 120 miles away in a community of about 40,000 and another one about 250 miles away, so the competition is just local.

You won't sell a gown every day, and other days you might sell 5, so you can't depend on a steady clientele. You also have few repeat customers, as other businesses do. You will have a fairly high inventory cost if you stock the shop well. These are all things to carefully consider before opening your doors.

hi there
being a recent bride, i can tell you things that REALLY were bad about the place I went to.

Each alteration was a FORUTNE! $$$$
Best to describe the costs up front, and not nickel and dime brides to death, they get pissed very quickly!

Scheduling issues with bridesmaids!
The place INSISTED all girls come at once! yea right! That is a nightmare!
Set up an account where when people say THE JONES WEDDING - the shop KNOWS who the heck they are talking about. the disconnect is horrible!

LACK OF SHOES!
OMG- that was the biggest pain! Last thing we all wanted to do was ALSO shop for shoes!
You need a LARGE selection! and include WIDE!
so many bridemaids are fat!

LACK OF VEILS!
talk about cheezy!
for an upscale place, the accessories were crap!
stay top of the line all the way around, not just mark up crappy accessories!
smart brides have been searching online and know the deal and the differnece.

Dressing rooms as you mentioned!
You need them BIG - WITH LOTS OF MIRRORS!

Undergarments!
PLEASE HAVE SOME ON HAND TO USE, AND PLEASE WASH THEM REGULARLY! YUCK!

FLOWER GIRL DRESSES!
There has to be a way to have these at the store and have them NOT COST A FORTUNE! $$$.
Moms do NOT want to spend a ton for kids! That is key!

MOTHER OF BRIDE
PLEASE HAVE THESE IN BIG SIZES! MOST OLDER MOMS ARE NOT A SIZE 6.
MORE LIKE 16.

PURSES!
Again, stay away from crap!
There are so many cool purse sites out there, something original would be refreshing.
That lord and taylor crap is on sale each week lets stay CREATIVE!

ok
also
SERVE WATER !!!
IT GETS STRESSFUL!
HAVE SOME SORT OF MUNCHIE AVAILABLE!
EVERYONE GETS CRANKY WHEN HUNGRY!

SECRET CODES ON DRESSES
OK, every bride goes , finds a dress, then tries to find it online.
Well most shops have a funky secret code.
Ya know, if you are just upfront and tell the bride the make and number- they will appreciate it and if they like you and your shop, they will come back.
dont try to con them with fake #'s.

WHEW!

I love the bridal biz!
but hate most places i have went to!

GOOD LUCK!
SOUNDS EXCITING!

I know this post is kind of old, but I wanted to address a couple of comments:

>okalsoSERVE WATER !!!IT GETS STRESSFUL!HAVE SOME SORT
>OF MUNCHIE AVAILABLE!EVERYONE GETS CRANKY WHEN
>HUNGRY!

Bridal shops should not have food available in the stores anywhere near the merchandise. Your inventory will be ruined either by sheer accident or by careless customers. Bad, bad idea! Brides: EAT before you go shopping, please. It's not the bridal salon's responsibility to make sure you're fed. If you get hungry, take a break and come back another day. It's ok to do that and not be mean, rude, or cranky while you're shopping.

>SECRET CODES ON DRESSESOK, every bride goes
>, finds a dress, then tries
>to find it online.Well most shops
>have a funky secret code.Ya know,
>if you are just upfront and

>shop, they will come back.dont try
>to con them with fake #'s.

Salons *must* do this because they're losing money because of brides coming into the shops, trying on gowns, and then going online to comparison shop. So the salon is paying a lease, utilities, employee wages, and inventory costs so brides can use the shop as a dressing room and buy elsewhere. Salons can't stay in business that way. It's not fair to the salons at all and many are suffering because they're being used in this manner. To help protect themselves (and stay in business), most salons use their own coded tags that mask the gown manufacturers' catalog #. It's not a con at all. It's smart business.

Many designers will make you sign a contract limiting your networking. Please be careful. I see so many young girls these days thinking they can just start a shop for a couple of thousand dollars and Network. NOT TRUE!!!!!!!

Beware of Networks. If you get caught networking you could be banned from ever carrying designers on your own!!!!!!!!Expect at least $50K (avg or $300 gown) in just inventory...at the lease to start your shop. Don't forget insurance, building permits, architects, leasehold improvements, computers, etc. I opened my shop years ago and would be willing to give it to you straight. bridal2be@hotmail.com

I am going to give the other view of networking in the bridal business. I have belonged to a very good one for over 4 years and the person that put me on to it was one of my reps from a very well known bridal designer. It is simplee the new way of doing business. He is also not the only rep that is part of the network.
I credit the network with the success of my business. Anna

Well you will definately have to put out some money so that you may have dresses available. People usually want to try them on. You can also have them order straight from your catalog, but the customer may want to see the sample material, so make it an investment and order what you think will sell. Remember start small then grow as you go.

You can buy the minimum from wholesale companys, usually the wholesale is a great buy. When you sell you can double your money and make up for what you bought. Always remember, you will have to invest some money to make money. So go for it. Buy only what you think will sell. Always the company you are buying from for their catalog. You can always show your catalog and order what they want.

30. "HI"
Posted by Ellis Jackson on 03:03:59 5/15/2005
Im not in the bridal business, but I can tell you some of the things you can do to get you started at low cost and be more cost effective for you.

Instead of trying to be a regular retail store how about doing this:

Only carrying a couple of each dress. I dont know womens sizes, so im just gonna use small, medium, large, extra large to help illustrate my point.

Carry all the different sizes/colors. But do not carry additional inventory. By having the different sizes/colors, the customer can see, feel the dress and try it on. If they like it, then you would order the dress for them to be delivered either to thier home or have it shipped to your store. I would make it an option for the client. Of course the dress you sell would be marked up to retail value once you purchase it at wholesale/discounted rate. This is utilizing dropshipping to its fullest and allowing you to carry more choices and items then you would have been able to do by actaully stocking an inventory.

Also you are not carrying an inventory, so if you dont sell it, your not stuck with it. Which also means your not out of money on it.

So the strength of this idea:

1) More choices for the clients
2) Hardly any inventory=less space you need or you can have more stuff in the same allocated space of your botiuqe.
3) No getting stuck with inventory and taking a loss on it.
4) Initial start up cost would be way lower by implementing this sort of idea and allow you to use the rest of the initial investment money on marketing/advertising.
5) Unlike other products, weddings are planned events and are not somthing they need to have at the moment they are shopping for it. Since most brides shop for thier wedding dress way in advance, so the extra time for delivery from your wholesaler/manufactorer/etc wont affect your ability to sell to them.
6) Since you do not need as big of space, nor take loss on inventory, you can actaully charge lower for it as well and could be used as an incentive. I usally dont like to fight on price wars but it can be a feasible option for you if you do decide to utilze prize war.

Hope that helps

31. "Helpful Hints for new stores or anyone thinking of opening"
Posted by Kori on 11:43:33 5/31/2005
HI,
Just wanted to chime in and let anyone out there who is thinking of opening a bridal store know what I think may be one of the most important tips. Most every bridal company has a "minimum" number of dresses that you MUST order each season in order to keep their line in your store. You need to do your research and CAREFULLY pick the companies that you choose to carry. Some companies have minimums of 4 per season, some can be as many as 20 per season...this means you may have to buy 40 dresses a YEAR from ONE company!! These bills will add up quickly so be VERY CAREFUL. My family opened a bridal store last year and we are still learning!! This is a great business and I do recommend it to anyone who has done their homework. Many great bridesmaids companies will send you their entire line of samples for free! The companies will usually stamp them with "sample" in permanent ink so they can not be sold but who cares...they are meant to be samples and you don't have to pay!!
Unfortunately you do pay for every bridal gown that you order as a sample...so make sure you can devote the time to help each bride to be try on the dresses...and I do mean actively help them put the dresses on as this will keep the dresses from getting stained by make up and such. You want to keep them looking great because you can sell them for those last minute brides that do not have time to order. If I can be of any help to anyone let me know!!
Goodluck to everyone!

Kori

124. "ORDERING GOWNS AND CHOOSING LINES"
Posted by Emily Goodwin on 07:50:33 2/16/2006
Hi,
I am opening a bridal shop in Chattanooga, TN and would like some assistance in the ordering of inventory. I've finished my business plan and turned it in to the bank for approval for a loan. Right now I'm just trying to plan the lines that I intend to carry and budgeting for it. I realize that I need to choose just a few lines a first so I don't get overwhelmed with the costs of all the company's minimums. I will be carrying couture dresses. I will open on Aug. 1st of this year. I'm going to market next month in Atlanta. Since I won't be open until August, I'll basically be going to market twice before I'm open a month (March and August). So, I'm trying to plan very carefully. How many lines should I go with first, how should I handle the August market - pick up another line? Buy more from the same? I will be carrying prom too, so in March I will buy for holidays and homecomings, but in August I will have a big prom purchase (as well as additional bridal). Any suggestions you can offer would be helpful.

Email me at emilygoodwin508@yahoo.com

Thanks!
Emily

I left a much higher paying job to work as a bridal consultant for a local bridal shop. Most shops need extra people on the weekend so you do not have to leave your current income. It also lets you see the good and the BAD before you jump into a carrer. Pay attention and ask questions and you will be an expert in no time! This is the best way to learn and now I am planing on opening my shop in March!

Hi everyone out there! I'm looking to open a bridal boutique and need all of the adivce I can get. I have been in the corporate world for 10 years now and am an accomplished divorced mother of 2. Other than wanting to own a bridal boutique always being a dream of mine (and working for myself) I am fairly illiterate on this subject. I have done my market research and know where I want to start my shop, but after that I draw a blank. I am clueless of where to go from there. Hello!!
I am very interested in opening a bridal store I already have a location and I don't have to pay a lease since my father owns a new strip mall on a busy part of town the only part I need help with is an idea of how much capital I may need to start up. I have some accessory vendors lined up mainly handcrafted but I would prefer not to spend to much on sample dresses since the less I pour into my business the less I have to make up. Getting bridesmaid sample dresses for free would be amazing!! Let me know if anyone has any info. Thanks again!!! jojopai44@hotmail.com

Posted by brideguy on 15:47:10 6/28/2006
Two things you need to know when thinking about opening a bridal shop: 1) Learn what a trans-shipper is and stay the heck away from them. 2)Realize that no three day seminar can prepare you for the reality of this business. You're better off buying "Small Business for Dummies". I opened my shop for about 40K intitally and have about 60k total invested. If you can't stomach at least that much AND the fact you have to buy minimums from designers, you're better off selling lemonade. Sorry if I sound a little P.O.'ed but there are certain folks on forums such as this painting a rosy picture and just plain preying on good people (like an unmentioned friend of mine). The SBA offers a free resource for potential small business owners. they are retired executives who are happy to give free, practical advice to anyone willing to listen. CAVEAT EMPTOR!!!

Like many other postings I've read here, I too am very interested in opening a high-end bridal salon in Southwest Florida. My passion was ignited while shopping for my own gown here - a very anti-climactic, disappointing experience at every salon I visited. I have lots of questions about start up costs, inventory, business plans, financing, etc. If you have any information on getting started in the business, I'd love to hear from you. People seem to be stumped on where to buy gowns.
There are bridal markets held at least twice a year in Chicago, Atlanta, Vegas, Dallas and the Couture show in New York. In the UK it is twice a year in Harrogate.

Do a search for the appparel marts in the different cities and GO. The best way to learn the ropes is to check it out in person. You will then have a much better idea of who the manufacturers are and what their policies are.
