Can anyone give me any ideas about how to get money for our business when we have bad personal credit? I have looked at grants and none seem to be for business. We have incorporated but that doesn't seem to help. Everyone still asks for personal SS#'s. I saw the section on the Cafe about the org. that help establish corporate credit reports, but won't that take a long time and on a regular credit or loan form what would you put in the place of the SS#? How do you get these creditors to even check with these organizations instead of the personal credit bureaus?

Also are there people who will write up a business plan for your company? I have been trying to do it but just can't get it done.

Also, banks and lenders are always looking for financial growth and all kinds of statements. What happens when you barely get by and don't really make much if any profit and you just have your bank statements and tax returns to show? I mean, this is why we need capital so that we can make money! But nobody wants to give anything to a business who isn't making a lot of money! HELP!

Overcoming your personal credit "glitches" will be difficult, but not impossible. Commercial lenders want your SS#'s because they want to check your personal credit. You will be asked to personally guaranty the business loan. Simply incorporating your business is not going to eliminate the guaranty.

Several things that you can do. First start looking for a cosigner or investor.

There are two good sources for business loans to the "credit challenged" both are nonbank nonprofit lenders. You will want to contact the SBA backed Microloan lender that services your area and your local Community Development Corporation.

If loan proceeds are going to be used to acquire equipment then you will want an equipment loan rather than a working capial loan. You do not want to tie up any WC lines with fixed asset financing.

Still don't know if the business is a start up based on an idea that was originally thought up by your great grand father or if the business has been in exsistence since you great grand father started it many years ago.

Your personal credit glitches are one obstacle that you will need to overcome. That is difficult, but not impossible.

We opened a small Mom and Pop resturant in Dec. 2000. It is in a small but growing commuity in Norther California. Our food is great, people drive miles for the homecooking. When we opened we used our credit cards and a family loan. Things were going good until Nov. 2001 when we had to close for 2 months to take care of a dieing brother. Hi i have an SBA loan about to close this week. the loan is for the purchase of a new building for my already existing preschool. (this will be the second preschool) My problem is.... i already secured an equipment loan last October in anticipation of opening a second center. The SBA however required me to close the loan because they have to be listed as first on every loan (prior to closing)......so now i have scraped, borrowed, and prayed and it looks like i will get the loan from sba for the building. So now i have no loan for equipment. Im afraid that banks will not lend to me because now i have aquired this new loan from sba/ which they may consider higher debt and more risk....... My credit is outstanding....score is somewhere around 730..... I do not want to land a loan with super high interest because of the position i am in..... Do you have any suggestions or can you offer any assistance?

I have asked several companies to invest into a nonprofit organization in my town. I asked for help banks in Alabama are reluctant, and companies are shy if it's not pertaining to FOOTBALL. This nonprofit organization is to assist with people in poverty, and cannot afford to purchase medicine, clothing, food, and daycare. The government is slow to help, and the political representives will not speak to you, unless its voting time. People have open up nonprofit organizations in their homes, and vacant buildings and some churches. I wonder what it takes to get funding in order to get established. I live in Alabama, maybe that has alot to do with it.

While there are a number of companies and individuals that can help put together a business plan, doing it yourself (I know, I know -- who's got time) is a good idea because the discipline of perparing the business plan helps you sharpen your idea of the business. I'd recommend the best of both worlds: software called Business Plan Pro by Palo Alto Software.

I've used it many times and think it's fantastic. It comes with templates and help at every turn. And, it's not expensive. I downloaded it from the Internet but it's also available at most office supply stores.

I suggest you find your local Small Business Development Center and get help from them. They will help you develop your business plan and also will know about not only SBA loans, but all about other loan programs available in your area. hi sounds like were in the same boat trying to start a small paving buisness but as i have had prvious debts and a young age banks/building societys dont want to know and its hard enough trying to get all the info on eg: book keeping & tax but there must be other ways.good luck!

We have one income at the moment (55,000) and our bills are taking 500.00 per month out of savings to pay each month. We want to start a tanning salon business and need 100,000 to 200,000. I want to purchase a florist shop. The owners have agreed to owner financing $35,000. I have a bank willing to give me a loan on the inventory but I still need $26,750 to purchase the business. The business is cashflowing enough to pay back this loan in one year with a baloon note of $8,400. I would also like to have an extra $5000 for working capital. My problem is little to no collateral. Hey, I just saw your message on businessownersideacafe.com and if you want to get BUSINESS Credit than you will have a federal tax ID number when you incorporated. You will use THAT number in place of your social security number. That will pull your Business crdit report. Good Luck,

Most lenders are still going to require personal SS#, because even though maybe the business is trying to borrow the money, the owners will still have to personally guarantee it.

I've been looking at these postings and I can't help but think of one word "WOW!". I myself have had to overcome shaky credit in order to obtain the capital needed to start a business. First things first- bad credit + no collateral= one enormous challenge. You have got to put together an airtight business plan that will be able to grab the attention of investors. Unfortunately with a credit rating averaging less than 630 from the three credit reporting agencies eliminates us from even approaching a bank. I've been able to successfully start numerous companies, in which I might add, that I had no prior expierence, with a solid business plan. Anyone can have a "great idea", but without an investor to see our dream in black and white(how he/she will be able to profit) it will stay just that, a "great idea". You have to build the excitement in your idea in others who will be willing to help. Remember "no" is the first step to getting a "yes". Persistance, dilligence, research, and excitemnet, plus that plan I told you about will ultimately help you achieve your goal.

I have wanted to open my own restaurant for many many years. Unfortunately....due to poor credit I am unable to obtain a loan....my business flan is just about perfect....down to every detail. I know where I want it to be, etc. I have my own part-time bookkeeping business, wouldnt even need to outsource my accounting. Why do people not want to give me a chance? In response to your restaurant, these loans are one of the hardest to obtain, bad credit makes it even harder. Unfortunately statistics show most new restaurants fail within their first year. Banks and lenders have access to these studies and base their decisions on the average market of the industry. I would suggest if you have tried every other route start making friends with other owners in the area talk to some catering business owners as well, enable yourself to create a network of people in the business. Also research the area, if you haven't already, to find out how many restaurants are in the area, this could be source of your loan frustration. Always leave the option open to find a more profitable market with less competition. Market domination has been what kept me afloat through the good and bad. Offering what is not already available,but desired by consumers, can help create a sound customer base. Excellent service and customer satisfaction being the main priority will keep those customers and they will tell others. So I close by saying do not give up your dream, you will regret it.

Since you have a corporation. There is a way that you can get financing using what is called a Business Credit Profile. Here is a link to a an article from entrepreneur.com
This should help you on creating a business profile. Also make sure you are an LLC or one of the other types of corp that the article talks about. Good luck. I have been working on my profile for about a month. In the next 2-3 months I should be ready to ask the bank for a nice loan so I can get started myself. BUSINESS PLAN IS A MUST.
