What does your business do?
My business provides alternatives to store bought skin products containing harmful or
unnecessary ingredients. It supports local small business bee farmers in Wisconsin by
using only natural beeswax.
When and why did you start the biz?
January 2018 I started Creative quinTESSence LLC. Prior to that I was making crafts
like light-catchers and tutus made to order for friends. I’ve always been into
homeopathic ideas. My friend gave me some of his beeswax after I helped him extract
the honey from the comb and I thought I would make a candle for him. Needless to say
the candle never turned out properly but a lotion bar came about! I researched and
made my own special creations based off healing natural ingredients. I started Creative
quinTESSence because the people around me were looking for alternatives to the norm
and continued asking for my product because it worked for them. Now my product line
has expanded past just solid lotion products.
How Many People are in your Company?
Where's your office?
My workspace used to be my kitchen table. It’s now the Lotion making station. I’m
surrounded by racks of oils on the wall. I usually have several of them in the diffuser
that is constantly used to try out new combinations. My spare room has 2 tables set up
with all my lotion bars, lotion sticks, and other items I sell so I can easily keep inventory.
Not to mention playing around with craft show set up arrangements.
What's the toughest part of running your biz?
The toughest part is having the extra income to make the product so it can sell. Start up
costs in the first year were surprising to me. I didn’t think the business would take off as
soon as it did.
What's the most fun part?
The best part is when I get compliments from people that my product has helped them. I
love seeing repeat customers. Hearing people talk about my product to others… Word-
of-mouth advertising gets me every time.
Anything you would have done differently?
I definitely would’ve done some research on grants or loans of some sort for new
businesses for women etc. instead of going full speed ahead with a business credit
card. Now I’m feeling the impact. It’s the one major thing I did not research properly.
What's next on the horizon for your biz?
I currently have only been doing indoor shows. Goal for next year is outdoor shows too.
This goal involves more monetary investments and uncertainties so more research is
needed for my expansion.
What advice do you have for others?
Do your research. Stay organized. Pay your taxes if they’re required. Ask for help.
How do you use Idea Cafe to help your biz?
I like to do research and this site has lots of information on it that I’ve been discovering.
I’m hoping to find more answers on grants and loans, ways to market my product, Get
help to modify my business plan. Right now everything came so fast over this past year
and a half, I am so I’m thankful to have found this resource.
