What does your business do?
Etheria Wellness is passionate about helping people learn to live
a healthy lifestyle. We offer free and paid classes on everything
from healthy eating to how to manage stress. We have several
meditation focused classes to help with stress reduction, pain
management, and mindfulness. We also host a biweekly relaxation
hour in which we invite the community to come in and just enjoy
herbal tea and unwind. Our Health and Life Coaching programs help
people with issues such as weight loss, life balance, reaching
goals and even overcoming some types of addiction. Everything we
do incorporates meditation, holistic wellness, and mindfulness to
help people live their best lives.
When and why did you start the biz?
We started our business in March of 2008. At that time, we were
only making natural candles, but we had a vision of what we wanted
to grow into. We still make candles and soaps, but our vision was
to run a meditation center. I became a Registered Nurse in January
of 2013, which molded the business idea into what it is now: a
holistic wellness center. From the beginning, my husband and I
wanted to run a business that would allow us to help people in a
profound way. We both know how meditation and mindfulness have
helped us overcome the challenges of our lives, and we want to
share this with as many people as we can. We feel that the
addition of my nursing experience has helped us create the perfect
combination of medical science and holist health.
How Many People are in your Company?
Where's your office?
Right now, our business is located an office building. We have one
large room that we conduct everything from one-on-one sessions to
large gatherings in. My dream is to move into an old Victorian house
with a combination of large and intimate spaces.
What's the toughest part of running your biz?
At this time, the hardest part about our business for me is
balancing the business with my job. For the time being, I still
need to work at least part time. I hope that with our new location
we will be able to expand to the point where we can both give all
our working hours to our company. My husband is our web guy. For
him, the hardest part is creating a website that he is happy with.
He is a perfectionist, so this hard for him, but he is really
What's the most fun part?
The most fun part is our group sessions. We have one group focused
on mindful living and they are a wonderful group of people. We
spend a couple of ours every other week discussing mindful living
and how we each practice this concept. We have some very
intelligent people in this group, so the conversation is always
Anything you would have done differently?
There are two big things that I would have done differently: 1)
saved more money before renting a space and 2) started sooner.
These may seem like conflicting thoughts but let me explain. For a
long time, we thought that we needed a lot of money and a big
space to run our business from. Our lifestyle made this difficult
for a few years, so we kept the business on-line. However, we
discovered a website called "MeetUp." This was a great thing for
us because it allowed us to put together our first group. We found
out that we could use meeting rooms in local libraries for free,
so we just "went for it" and our business started to blossom
quickly. However, sometimes it was hard to get the meeting rooms
when we wanted them. This made us feel like we needed to have our
own space. We sort of rushed to find a place. In the rush, we
didn't put as much money into the business account as we should
have, which made things harder than they had to be. Rushing also
led us to choose a space that was not perfect. I do wish that we
had stayed the library a bit longer, saved more money and held out
for a better space. On the other hand, I also wish that we had
found “Meetup” and just started sooner.
What's next on the horizon for your biz?
The next big thing for us will be to host retreats. These will be
healthy living intensives where people can come from anywhere to
spend a few days or maybe even a week, learning about healthy
living. We will offer yoga and other physical activities, healthy
eating, life balance, and mindfulness workshops. We will also have
a lot of fun to show people that life can be balanced.
What advice do you have for others?
The first piece of advice I would offer is not to go into business
just to be a business owner. I've done that and failed. To be
successful, you need to be passionate about your business. You need
to love it and want to nurture it as though it is your baby - which
it should be. If you love what you are doing, you will not only be
unstoppable, but your customers will see this in you and your success
will come faster.
How do you use Idea Cafe to help your biz?
Idea Cafe is a wonderful source to business owners. I use it to find
all types of information. I love the marketing and legal advice
pages. I also like to spend time reading about other businesses. You
never know when you will stumble on a juicy tid-bit that you can use
in your own business. I think this is a one-stop shop for just about
anything you need to know about starting or running a business.
School (where, still in school, degree)?
I got my Associate in Science Nursing degree at Keiser University in Orlando, FL and my Bachelor of Science Nursing degree from WGU.
Prior jobs or business?
Oh I've had so many jobs! I began my working career at about 12
years old when I used to make money babysitting. I went on to work
in many restaurants, a couple of factories, and a couple of sales
jobs. I owned a home day care for about 6 years. I also owned an
aquarium maintenance company for a few years. After I became a
nurse, I worked in both home health and hospitals for many years
before opening my business. I still work part-time as a home
I love all food, but I enjoy seafood and cake the most.
What are your pets' names?
I have a Russian tortoise named Magoo and about 15 fish. The African cichlids answer to "puppies" and the guppies answer to "kitties."
Do any of these pets help with your biz?
Not actively, but the fish are a great souce of relaxation and the
tortoise is just a funny little guy, so he always gives a laugh or
Is there any one person or event in your life that led
you to go into business for yourself?
I have wanted to work for myself for as long as I can remember. In
elementary school I sold things like Christmas cards during the
summer months to make extra money. I guess I've always had an
Anyone you publicly want to thank?
I would like to thank my wonderful husband Pat, who saved my life,
supported me through nursing school and helped me grow into the
person I am today.
