What does your business do?
We sell games and also have table space for game play of our demo
games or competitions. We also are installing a deli to feed the
hungry games. We hold friendly competitions for trading card games
where people from all ages and backgrounds come together to enjoy
each others company.
When and why did you start the biz?
On 04/2017 we opened Emerald Dragon Games to start a business that
both myself and my husband could enjoy. We enjoy seeing kids and
adults come together having fun at the tables and love providing a
safe and fun space for that to happen. I was an at home mom who
hated that there was no place close that my kids could go to play
games and socialize. My husband will be retiring from the military
June of this year and with his disability this is something he is
still capable of helping with.
How Many People are in your Company?
2 paid employees (4 if you include my husband and myself though we are not paid yet)
Where's your office?
Our office is technically behind the register counter in the
store. We do alot of our social advertising online website work on
register computers or laptop. The store is a vivid green with
black slat wall and there are games as far as you can see. ( pics

What's the toughest part of running your biz?
The toughest part has been transitioning to selling product online to
keep the doors open. We recently just moved to a new POS that is web
based to allow smoother web sales and in store sales.
What's the most fun part?
Seeing a family sit down and laugh while playing a games, or
complete strangers form new friendships is the best. We do not
charge for table space so anyone can join in. I have seen several
friendships form from people that would otherwise never have
gotten to know each other. Our store bridges a gap between age and
or occupation and lets everyone sit and have fun together.
Anything you would have done differently?
I would have started out selling items online, because in store
sales just aren't enough to keep the doors open. More and more
sales are done online. I also would have started out with a deli
in the back as I believe that would drive profit up dramatically.
Most people play for a minimum of 3 hours so they get hungry and
don't want to leave mid game.
What's next on the horizon for your biz?
We are installing a Deli to provide more sales and profit in store.
We have increased our online presence and are selling both on TCG
player and Amazon (possibly moving to more online sales avenues in
What advice do you have for others?
The trick for us has been to find what we love to do and then find
out how to make a living out of it. Online sales are everything for
merchandise nowadays. In store sales are more for service type
atmospheres which is what we are moving to.
Follow your dreams with realistic and obtainable goals, one after
another. Never stop evaluating your business and seeing where it can
How do you use Idea Cafe to help your biz?
I am hopeful that I will learn new ways to improve my business and
also hopeful that a grant will be sent my way to assist in the moves
I'm making with my business. We often don't know what we are missing
until we see someone else doing it so I am here to learn as much as
School (where, still in school, degree)?
COA , Elizabeth City NC, no, none
Prior jobs or business?
I worked as a kitchen manager for Chick Fil A up until I was pregnant
with my third child 14 years ago. Years before that I was also a
manager at Blockbuster. I supposed my business would be a combination
of both fields.
What are your pets' names?
Webby and Tomas
Do any of these pets help with your biz?
No, Webby would knock stuff off the shelves with her big tail and
Tomas would jump up on racks knocking things over getting away from
Is there any one person or event in your life that led
you to go into business for yourself?
My husband was preparing for retirement with injuries from the
military when he asked if I would like to be a game store owner. We
did the research on it and decided that we could open it while he
still had time left in military to build it up before he got out.
