Fun Raisers

Name: Clara Ross

Location: South Bend, IN

Type of Business:
Resource/Consulting for fund raising not for profits.

What does your business do?
Create custom signature events/programs in creating financial funds for a business or organization.

When and why did you start the biz?
The business Fun Raisers is a extension of Bubbles The Clown which has been established since 1996. It is adding more services and event planning.

How Many People are in your Company?
1-10 depending on the event

Where's your office?
My two bedroom home is officially only 1 bedroom. The guest room is converted into a work space. I have shelving that holds mini carnival games, prizes and toys. On the shelves in the basement hold decorations for table tops and center pieces. Stacked crates for dinner plates/cups and eating utensils. Clear totes marked for color coded cloth table clothes and skirts. A 8 foot table sets in the middles of the room in the left corner sets a computer, color 3 subject note books for different events such as annual events, monthly and weekly events in the local region. File cabinets in walk in closet instead of clothes. A Childs Playschool blackboard with handy colored chalk written in scribbles only I can decode.

What's the toughest part of running your biz?
(1) Finding trustworthy employees who will represent your business with ethics and morals. (2) Staying on top and in tune to social media changes. (3) Finding the right source to put your money when it comes to marketing.

What's the most fun part?
Being able to be creative and think outside the box for each client. Making it new and fresh for a tried and true formulas that brings in financial resource to each individual organization.

Anything you would have done differently?
Know your own worth. Pay yourself, not everyone is your client and may not be the perfect fit. Plan early, stay late and have a plan B, for the just in case. Have spare equipment on hand. Breath and know you did your best and sometime stuff happens. Last but not least do not put all your eggs in one basket(still referring to plan B).

What's next on the horizon for your biz?
Continue expansion that involves grant writing, event planning, event hosting and consulting.

What advice do you have for others?
Start off vanilla plain and simple. That way you will not get lost trying to do too much too soon. Perfect that service/business then add al carte (add more thing to keep your business flesh and up to date.) Network anywhere and everywhere. It is exciting to you it will become exciting to others. Use social media to your advantage. Don't be afraid of your haters they will push you to do better. Don't surround yourself with people who are negative and buzz kills. Pay yourself what your are worth can never say this enough. Know what is going on in your business because in the end it falls on you. Pay your bills and keep a good reputation. Word of mouth is the best form of marketing. You got to spend money to make money. You get what you pay for (don't be cheap on supplies or things you need). Take time for yourself to recoup your energy and strength..

How do you use Idea Cafe to help your biz?
It is easy to get off track or spin your wheels thinking you going some where when you just standing still or becoming stale. I have been in business since 1996 as the only employee. Occasionally hiring others to assist with a event or program. The time has come where this no longer a one woman show and it is time to take it to the next level. I need advise on how to make this transition smoothly with limited source of finances. Mostly feedback on people who have been there done that attitude. Shortcuts I many not even know exist. I need people in my corner feet have been to the ground (means have walked the trail before me).

School (where, still in school, degree)?
Indiana University of South Bend Extended Service certificate in Hospitality.

Prior jobs or business?
Elegance by DeSigne (Event planning services)(Co-Owner) 10 yrs Bubbles the Clown (Entertainment)(Self) 24 years Dream Makers Arts Camp(Day camp for youths 5-17)(Owner)6 yr Voices of Youth (Youth talent show against gun/youth violence) (2yrs)

Favorite Food?
Fried pork chops

What are your pets' names?

Do any of these pets help with your biz?

Is there any one person or event in your life that led you to go into business for yourself?
I am a school teacher and what to take my business in a new direction.

Anyone you publicly want to thank?
