What does your business do?
DrivenDogs Agility teaches dog agility to everyone, from beginners to National level competitors. We also offer dog agility competitions sanctioned by the United States Dog Agility Association.
When and why did you start the biz?
I opened DrivenDogs Agility in June 2004. I have competed in Dog Agility since 1992, and love the sport! After teaching for other Southern CA facilities since 1999, I decided to open DrivenDogs and begin teaching for myself in 2004. My passion for the sport of dog agility and competing, has driven me to share my knowledge with others!
How Many People are in your Company?
Where's your office?
I have a small office in my home (spare bedroom) for doing administrative work. The vast majority of my time is spent at my training field, which is outdoors on private property. Agility is an active sport which requires plenty of room for the participants to run and work with their dogs. Currently I teach outdoors on a rented field, on private property; however, many people also use large indoor facilities.
What's the toughest part of running your biz?
Being that this is a sport that requires lots of space (ideally 120' x 100', but smaller areas can work temporarily), it can be a challenge to find locations to rent that are large enough to accommodate our needs, while not going over budget. Ideally, I would like to find a location that I can purchase. Additionally, I would like to expand the business (larger facility and hire additional instructors) so that I can have better control of how much I teach, which would allow me more time to handle the administrative side of the business.
What's the most fun part?
I love helping my students to achieve their goals (small and large). Everything from learning a new skill, to winning a National Championship!
Anything you would have done differently?
Since I am so dependent on location, I would have secured a permanent location sooner.
What's next on the horizon for your biz?
Looking to find a larger, permanent location. Hopefully, expand the business to more instructors, so DrivenDogs is able to work with more people.
What advice do you have for others?
Stay focused on your goal. You will always have to overcome setbacks, but keep moving forward!

Is there any one person or event in your life that led
you to go into business for yourself?
My mother first became involved in Dog Sports in the late 1980s. She opened the first Dog Agility training facility in Southern CA in the early 1990s. In 1992, I started training and competing with my Grandparent's Springer Spaniel, and was hooked. I have been active competing and teaching the sport since!
