Ways to Remain Healthy at the Office
On average, someone who works in an office sits for more than 6 hours a day. This can cause serious health-related issues now and in the future. The good news is there are ways to reduce your odds of becoming sick or developing an injury or disease.
LIfe Moves Quickly As you get older you figure out how quickly life moves along. Days start to mesh and before you know it the holidays are here. Everyone has events that occur throughout the year and remaining healthy is something you can’t afford to take for granted. You may have a planned wedding and need to prepare save the date cards or have a 20th-anniversary party with your graduating class from high school.
Take Breaks One way to restore energy during those mid-morning and mid-day slumps is to get up and take a walk. Most companies provide lunch breaks and breaks in the morning and afternoon. Use this time to get up away from the desk and get the blood circulating. Sitting for extended amounts of time can cause a lack of circulation. Getting away from the desk will also help to clear your mind. When you return to your desk you’ll be alert, focused and energized.
Eat Smart In some businesses, the lunch break is only 30 minutes long. If you don’t bag your lunch for the office you may end up opting for fast food due to time constraints. Fast food does nothing for you except pack on the pounds and leaves you overfull. This will cause you to feel sleepy and unenergetic. Instead, prepare your lunch at home. Make a salad and add a light vinaigrette. You’ll eliminate the lethargic feelings and replace them with energy. As an added bonus, you won’t spend any money.
A High-Quality Ergonomic Chair Some offices provide decent chairs for their employees. However, many small businesses with a limited budget only provide the classic task chair. While it’s fine for a short duration, sitting in it for several hours can cause back and shoulder aches and no support for your arms. It’s up to you to replace it with a modern office chair that’s adjustable and provides lumbar support.
Keep Moving Sitting at a desk for many hours doesn’t mean that you have to sit still. There are clever ways to burn calories, relax and work at the same time. For example, you can perform a yoga exercise while seated. You can also opt to bring in an exercise wheel that fits underneath the desk discreetly. Another choice is to change your workspace completely and purchase a desk that gives you both the option of standing and sitting.
Drink Water Water is a clear liquid that fuels the body. It has no calories so you can drink it without regret. It also satisfies thirst, helps prevent dehydration and alleviates headaches. Water can also keep your mind sharp and your mental state of mind focused. Make sure to keep a bottle handy at your desk and drink it often.
Maintain a Clean Desk Disorganized work spaces can lead to wasted time and higher amounts of stress. Make it a habit to keep your desk neat and organized. You’ll hum through your day like a well-oiled machine. Additionally, washing your hands often and sanitizing your desk, computer and other equipment will help to prevent the spread of germs.
Working in an office can make you susceptible to contracting frequent colds and pain, having poor circulation and weight gain. Thankfully, if you take the necessary steps to improve your quality of life while at the office, you’ll remain healthy.
