Turn Your Passion Into Profit

Do you have a special passion or hobby that you would love to turn into a career? Most people do not think that it's possible to turn a hobby into a career. Regardless of your hobby, if you are determined and patient enough, you can use it to gain income. However, here are some examples of various hobbies that can become a career option.

Selling Antiques

If you have always been interested in history or collecting items, selling antiques such as antique furniture might be a great way to convert your passion to a livelihood. As an antique seller, you will get to come across one-of-a-kind items in history. Many people sell their old family heirlooms or collections to antique stores and you’ll have the opportunity to give those valuable items a new home. Who knows, maybe you’ll even come across some of the items that you enjoy collecting and you'll have the first pick.

Art

Whether you’re an artist or you just love viewing or buying art, there are many ways to turn your passion into a career. First, you could open or work at an art gallery/ museum. No matter what your job description is at the museum/gallery you will be surrounded by art all day long. Researching local job openings on sites such as Indeed can be helpful for this. If you are interested in collecting art, you may want to start out by becoming an agent who finds buyers to purchase their clients' artwork. Lastly, if you enjoy creating art, consider showing your work to local galleries to display. Even if you start small, creating good relationships with the galleries in town is a great starting place.

Musicians
There are many ways musicians can begin their career in music. If you are a classical musician, there are many volunteer orchestras and bands locally that you can become a part of. While this may not provide money, it would be a great resume builder. In addition, you can give private and group lessons which can help you earn quite a bit of money. If you are in a band or play non-classical instruments, you can also give lessons. However, it may be worth it to check with local bars, clubs, casinos, weddings, concert halls, nursing homes and restaurants to see if they have any openings for musicians. All of these places can give you experience and add to your resume.

Video/Board Gaming

There are many people who have successfully turned their passion for playing games into career paths. Boardgame cafes have opened all across America. Working at a place like this not only gives you the chance to make money while you are surrounded by people enjoying your hobby but it can give you free access to all sorts of games. In addition, many video gamers have been successful at creating YouTube channels where they stream themselves playing their favorite video games. You would be surprised how many people will pay to watch a skilled video gamer play.

Woodworking

If you enjoy woodwork, it is definitely possible for you to turn your hobby into a career. Many people are willing to pay a lot of money for handcrafted furniture and/or decorations created from wood. There are many opportunities to put this craft to use if you work from commission. You can create wedding centerpieces, sheds, swing sets, in-home furniture and much more. Joining a Facebook group can be a great way to market yourself to new customers. There are also ways to market your woodwork to people in the community. Consider renting a booth at a bridal show, local fair, or flea market.

Regardless of your business venture, be sure to check out the rules and regulations of self-employment and small business with the U.S. Department of Labor. And you’ll need to do some research to make sure you have the right tools to help you make sure your business succeeds.
