No Email? That's Not a Problem: Building an Effective Communication With Your Non-Desk Employees
Whenever you start a new job, there are a few constants you can be certain of: onboarding, introducing yourself repeatedly, talking to HR, and you most definitely get a work email. After all, according to a report by the Radicati Group, an average office worker will send and receive 121 emails daily so course it makes sense that you have a company email. However, what if you’re not an office worker? In America alone, 83% of the workforce are non-desk employees and they typically don’t have access to a company email. Therefore, communicating with non-desk employees is a climbing Mount Everest like challenge.
In fact, most companies with non-desk workers communicate with them through their direct managers, it just makes the most sense. But this is an imperfect solution, some managers don’t share news right away but instead forget or push it off. Or the message they share is not consistent with what the higher-ups originally meant. Here’s the thing though, research done by Tribe found that 53% of direct managers don’t want to communicate with non-desk employees directly, instead they want online tools to help them communicate more efficiently.
With all of that in mind, what are some ways a company and direct managers can fill the communication gap with non-desk employees?
In-person meetings. There is no substitute for facetime when it comes to communication. Send the higher-ups into the field to actually have conversations with managers and non-desk employees. Getting everyone together can be productive, fun, and will help to improve morale. A little face-to-face meeting to everyone on the same page and to extend your gratitude, simply saying “thank you”, will increase motivation and will reduce turnover. After all, 20% of employees have said they don’t even get a simple “thank you” from their employer.
Use advanced employee communication tools. Connecteam's employee communication app is the online solution you’ve been looking for. Connecteam is an all-in-one mobile app that allows you to reach all of your employees, no matter where they are and from one place.
Create group or private chats, send immediate updates without comment capabilities, celebrate milestones (sales, birthdays, anniversaries, employee of the month, etc), a built-in employee directory, create online surveys, a suggestion box, and so much more.
What’s best about Connecteam is that it’s super easy to use, you don’t need any training to understand the app, and the price is totally affordable. Instead of paying per user, you pay a fixed monthly fee up to 200 users, starting at $29 or $59 monthly. If you need more than 200 users, there is an Enterprise plan that also includes fixed monthly fees.
Use digital forms and surveys. Don’t use pen and paper, instead offen an online solution to have your non-desk employees fill out forms and surveys. Whenever they have time, they’ll fill them out and management will immediately receive the completed form. If you choose Connecteam as an online solution, one of their features includes online checklists & forms and creating personalized surveys.
Communicating with your non-desk employees might seem incredibly challenging, but it’s crucial to your success. When non-desk employees are kept in the loop, when they understand the company’s vision and business objectives, when they feel valued and respected, they will work far more productively and effectively.
