How Technology Improvements have Transformed the Courier Industry
Demand for courier services has been boosted by people doing some of their shopping online. The ease of buying groceries, Christmas presents and other gifts from a smartphone, laptop or tablet has given many couriers plenty of business, but how has the industry coped? The answer comes from the increasing use of new technology. To handle the billions of parcels that go through them each year, many couriers have decided to use GPS technology. This helps them to track the progress of each delivery and plan the quickest, easiest and safest route for drivers to follow. Customers can also check how long they have to wait until they receive their parcel delivery. For processing deliveries, many couriers have systems which store data received from each order. Then, the data is used to work alongside GPS to plan routes and check that every delivery has gone as expected. Improved Vehicles For orders such as groceries, the technology used to keep the packages safe has been improved. It controls temperatures to keep fresh food from spoiling and electrical appliances from overheating or freezing up. Refrigerated courier services have seen the grocery delivery market grow rapidly. In ensuring that packages of all shapes and sizes are safe, couriers are able to provide a more reliable services. It also means that deliveries arrive to their destination in the best possible condition, leaving customers feeling happy in the process. Improvements in technology have made it possible to deliver packages far more quickly. Due to the ease of processing an order and shipping products, same day delivery has become an option for customers who are in urgent need. This really comes in useful during the busy holiday periods. Express Delivery In being able to handle same day deliveries, couriers have since been able to move towards express deliveries. For international orders, they can take a little longer than a day to complete, but are done as quickly as possible. Businesses with a significant client base overseas will find this method the most useful. Booking a specific time for express delivery has been improved because of technology. With that, customers are able to plan for their package arriving at a time to suit them, whether at home or in the office. For smaller orders, delivery drones and robots are likely to play a bigger role in covering those shorter, urban deliveries. This delivery method is cost-effective and makes sense for individual packages, although drones are mainly still in the testing phase.
