Featured Biz Question

I'm in the process of starting my own business. It calls for calling potential clients on the phone and faxing. I don't have a problem with faxing. It's the phone part that I have trouble dealing with. How do I overcome my fear of calling people on the phone? I'm sure that after a few initial calls, I'll be fine. But, it's the fist few calls that I'm having trouble with. How do I overcome this? I just get real nervous when talking to potential clients. I don't want to come across as an idiot. What do you advise to overcome this? Thanks.

Dear Idea Cafe Schmoozer,

First, congrats on deciding to take a bite out of the biz world from your home! This in itself is a challenge and the fact that you're brave enough to do that will make your phone fear seem like peanuts to you, in the long run.

You seem to be comparing your phone fear to the fear of public speaking, which is, in my opinion, one of the greatest fears of all time!

But the good news is you're not really in public -- you're on home turf; in your comfort zone. So take advantage of your cozy, private home office location and its surroundings. Relax. It's absolutely natural for you to fear these calls initially, but after you know your industry better and how your target audience tends to react, you can answer questions more easily. Suddenly, your phone fear will surely be a thing of the past. To make this happen faster, here are a few phone-phobia tips for you. continued
