Featured Biz Question

Problem employee! Here's the problem. She has been here for 18 years and is no longer able to do her job effectively. She has been outgrown by this company and will not change her ways. What do I do with her?

Answer from our Guest Expert Lillyvette Montalvo

Hello, there, and thanks for the question. This is a problem, indeed! However, it goes deeper than what I see in your brief question. The kicker is this isn't just her problem, but yours as well.

You can't overlook a certain important factor at this stage -- company loyalty. This employee's 18 years with your company shows a true dedication. A trait, I might add, that isn't seen as often nowadays, since many younger workers are attracted to added benefits and higher salaries elsewhere. Some even simply feel stale when they've been in one place too long - whatever "too long" may be. With this issue out on the table, let's dig in with some tips for you.

Who Said You Can't Teach an Old Dog New Tricks?

I'm a bit puzzled about your "will not change her ways" statement. Did you know it's a proven fact that if a person, who constantly puts her right shoe on first, starts to put her left shoe on first for 20 consecutive days, she'll break her "old way" of putting her right shoe on first? I use this very simple situation to demonstrate how people can change habits and turn over a new leaf. All it takes is consistency, effort and time. Perhaps, if you dedicated time to her and she dedicated time to changing her ways, together, you could accomplish great feats for both the employee - an 18-year employee is a valued employee - and your company.
