The Biz Question

I want to design and operate a website where I want to list the local businesses coupons on the www. I would appreciate any advice on how I can market this idea to local businesses. Thank you.

Answer from our Guest Expert Jim Chesky of Marketing Communications

Hi, There!

What's hot on the marketing menu for any local business is the same regardless of the media. The bottom line is they want to see how your media -- your online coupon website -- will reach and cater to their potential customers. If you can show your website is accepted and frequented by their respective prospects, you'll sell the advertisers. And that's the easy part.

The hard part is creating a website that's targeted enough to cook up the audience your advertisers wish to reach. While the local biz person is interested in local customers, the Internet is vast, without boundaries, and the flavor is international. It's no surprise that one of the more successful websites is Amazon.com. That's because a book is a book whether I'm a Laplander ordering off my laptop, or a moose stuffer in Minnesota buying a book on taxidermy.

The web knows no boundaries. It doesn't care where users live, but your advertisers may. This leaves you with some decisions on the kind of site to create, and the kind of advertisers you want to pursue.

Here are several directions you could go with your local-coupon website idea.
