The Biz Question

I'd love a roadmap on how to get started as I'm going off in too many directions and realize it's time to get focused but not sure I'm setting my priorities correctly.

Answer from our Guest Expert Allison Gaea Jucha of Yes!Coaching

You are one of many people experiencing a shift from soaring in the realm of ideas to bringing those ideas into form. You may be experiencing this as very confusing as well as very exciting. One definition of the entrepreneur is someone who's in business for himself, but a common thread of entrepreneurship is the ability to dream so widely and so well as not to be able to focus.

You might well see yourself in Michael Gerber's book "The E-Myth Revisited" which helps the new business person recognize three aspects of self-in-business: Dreamer/ Manager/ Technician. The Dreamer is a visionary; the Manager knows how to get things done; the Technician does the work. By discovering these three people inside you, you may find answers to some of these key questions for focus - Why do you want to do business? Do you want to supervise people, do your own paperwork, expand, stay small? What circles do you want to move in? Who do you want to serve? What do you want from your choice besides income?

You are setting your priorities correctly if what you choose to do is in alignment with what you need and want. This is why you do business. The issue of what you can deliver is more about how you do business. For instance, you may be a dancer. You can perform and even choreograph. Can you do publicity, book theaters, manage funds, write grants?

Or you may be a successful businessperson who wants to open a cafe. Do you know anything about coffees, espresso machines, food service? Take stock of what aspects of your potential business you would like to and are qualified to do. Be prepared to find you may not be able to do everything. On the other hand, if you find that you are the business - such as a massage therapist - you may well need to learn a bit of everything to market yourself, rent a work space, keep financial records, and schedule appointments.

No matter what you choose, if it is headed in the direction you want to go, you will learn much about yourself and your abilities. You will definitely be given a chance to grow. For more personalized assistance with this process, you might consider asking another successful businessperson or a coach to mentor you.
