Scanjet 3500c

Photo quality results for your creative projects! The slim, easy-to-use HP Scanjet 3500c scanner provides crisp photo-quality results with up to 1200 dpi and 48-bit color. Scan, copy and e-mail one-touch buttons make your creative projects easy. You can scan photos, text, graphics, and even 3-D objects, then print, e-mail and post to the web. Plus the optional 35mm negative and slide adapter allows you to add even more to your projects (optional adapter not included, please purchase separately).

That's what HewlettPackard says...What does Idea Cafe think?

Our Out-of-Box-Experience

Over the years we've reviewed several HP scanners. The first thing we noticed when we lifted the Scanjet 3500c out of the box was how compact it was compared to some of the other models. Priced at about $100, it's a perfect entry level scanner that will allow anyone to get into the digital groove.

Idea Cafe's Use and Abuse Test

The Scanjet 3500c scans at 1200dpi and 48 bit color depth, which is great for an entry level scanner. You'll get sharp scans whether you're trying to print your favorite photo or want to share your latest shot through email. Backing up. Setup was very easy: 1. Out of the box, 2. Install driver 3. Plug in scanner to usb and power 4. Scan. Plus, with it's small footprint (about 20in x 12 in), it easily fits on any desk area.

The 3500c makes it easy to scan, copy or email with the push of the button. Previewing a scan takes only 10 seconds, and a full scan (4x6 in color) takes less than 40 seconds. We found the scanning software easy to use. You can scale your final output image, select resolution, sharpen and correct color all with a click of the button, plus you've got over 10 file formats to choose from when you do your final scan.

We also wanted to note that the 3500c has a built in slide and negative scanner. It has a special strip of glass down the middle that lets you scan your photo negatives or slides right into your computer.

Along with all the standard scanning software, you'll get Hemera Greeting Card Creator, Hemera Jigsaw Puzzler and CD Designs Creator.

Were We Impressed?

Yes we were. The scanning software has the same HP feel that you're used to if you've used other HP scanners. It came with out of the box support for Mac OS X (some other scanners still don't offer that), and was intuitive and easy to set up on any platform.

It's easy to let your creativity loose with the HP memories disc creator software - create a digital slide show to share, or just organize, store and print your photos.

You can set the scanner to stay awake during certain hours if you use it quite often. This is a good setting to make use of, otherwise you've got to wait 30 to 60 seconds for the scanner to "wake up" (see our bad taste below).

Any Bad Tastes?

We found a couple small irritants. You've got a huge plug to deal with that will hog your power supply. It would be great if they could separate the power supply from the actual plug to create a powerstrip friendly plug.

If you're running a Mac, you're out of luck for any additional bundled software - it's Windows only for the Hemera software.
